Senior Member of Technical Staff

I started at Tellabs as a tier-two support specialist for Data Products, and rapidly became the SME for Data Products. In an 18-year career, I created the first Product Validation group, and rose to Senior Member of Technical Staff in Product Development. Lead Product Validation Test Engineer, Packet and TDM Data and Voice Network Products.

I consulted on product requirements, wrote test plans traceable to requirements, manual tests and automated test scripts in Tats and LabView. I represented the group in project team meetings, and had signoff authority in release meetings. I configured the lab, executed tests, reported results, did root cause analysis and took corrective action for what we missed. I automated the integration test function for the Tellabs 44x intelligent T1 based voice and data networking product, reducing the staff required from three to one, and integration test cycle duration from two weeks to two days. I increased test coverage at reduced cost by assigning functional attributes to orthogonal arrays representing test suites. I headed up the Y2K test plan to test the 33X product line, a packet switch based communications product line used by the FAA for air traffic control, and the IRS. Issues were corrected, firmware updated, no failures were reported. Quality Assurance Engineer, Environmental Test.

Partshelf.com is our family owned, online retail site. I created it in my spare time in order to give my wife a way to stay sane and make some money from home while raising the kids, and later, to give my step-son some job experience. It became a full time job for a while, out of necessity, after the Tellabs layoff. Created the website, www.partshelf.com, on the YaHoo platform. Re-designed the web page templates, adding functionality, coding in RTML and HTML. Did search engine optimization (SEO). Wrote the site content and product descriptions, took photos. Evaluated and calibrated cooking and weather thermometers using temperature standards and thermal chambers. Built and installed the Windows and Linux office computers, the Linux Samba workgroup server, the office Ethernet network, VPN to interconnect the home and office networks, and installed a key telephone system. Integrated YaHoo Stores, Stoneedge order manager, UPS and FedEx databases to maintain real-time inventory management and seamless order processing. The databases are in Microsoft Access, with data shared via ODBC. Implemented bar code control throughout order processing. This reduced our order completion error rate to below .1%. Traveled to trade shows in Hong Kong and China, found suppliers, defined our own line of products, imported them. Grew sales to levels in excess of $1M annually through organic search results only, no paid advertising. Managed a staff of 5 and $1M budget, the business, and the warehouse.
