RESUME OF PROF. (Dr.) T. KUMAR
Prof. Tarkeshwar Kumar completed his Higher Secondary education from the prestigious
Netarhat Residential School of Bihar in 1972 with 8th rank in the Board examination. He
obtained his BTech in 1977 and MTech in 1984 in Petroleum Engg both from Indian School
of Mines Dhanbad. He obtained PhD degree in Petroleum Engg from Heriot-Watt University,
UK in 1988 under the prestigious Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholarship award. He
served Assam Oil Company Digboi, from 1977 to 1981 before joining ISM as Lecturer in
1981. He became Professor on 23rd January 1992 and served as HOD and Dean before
becoming Director of ISM on 9th August 2005, the post which he held till 3rd July 2011. He
also held additional charge of Director, NIFFT Ranchi from 11th April 2008 to 11th July 2011.
He is Director, NIT Durgapur since 11th July 2011.
Prof. Kumar is fellow of IEI and member of MGMI, ISTE, IIPA, IGC, SPG & SPE
International USA. He has also served as expert member of UPSC, DST-TIFAC, AICTE,
Central and Jharkhand Government. He was member of bodies such as academic council of
UPES & BHU, BOG of BIT Sindri & IEMS Jamshedpur. He is Visitor s Nominee of IIT
Kharagpur & IIT Bhubneshwar. He is non-official part-time Director on the Board of UCIL
& NTPL. He is also member of Governing Council of AIU.
Prof. Kumar is reviewer of journals of CSIR, IEI, MGMI, SPE-USA and Canadian JPT. His
areas of interest of research include petroleum production and reservoir engineering. He has
supervised many MTech and PhD theses. He has to his credit over hundred national and
international technical publications and a patent on plant based corrosion inhibitor for
protection of steel. He coordinated several courses for executives of petroleum and related
industries and delivered special lectures.
In recognition of his significant contribution in the field of Oil and Gas, the Ministry of
Mines, Govt. of India has awarded Prof. Kumar with the Prestigious National Mineral
Award-2008. He has visited countries like UK, USA, Kuwait, Turkey, France and China.
New Global Indian, an international magazine has published his profile in its February-
March, 2010 issue under the heading Fuelling Education, Igniting Inspiration . Chemical
Business journal has also published his profile in its Vol. 25, No. 1, January 2011 issue
under the heading Personality of the Month . ETV Bihar/Jharkhand also telecasted a
programme on Life & Achievement of Prof. Kumar on 23rd April 2011. His contributions
to the advancement of engineering education and research are commendable.
