Career Highlights

1984 Leadership and coordination for the launch of library catalogue automation at

Ghent University by joining the Belgian research library consortium LIBISnet.

1987 Leadership, coordination, and implementation of a local area network at the Ghent

University Central Library that also provided wide area functionality, e.g. connecting

to LIBISnet. It was the first local area network in a Belgian research library.

1989 Project management, concept and realization of the first generation of the Belgian

Scientific Union Catalogue on CD-ROM (Collectieve Catalogus Belgi ), with

Alberic Regent. CD-ROM contained over 2.000.000 titles held by Belgian scientific

institutions. It was the first national union catalogue on CD-ROM in Europe.

1990 Leadership, coordination, and implementation of a multi-user CD-ROM

consultation facility on the local area network of the Ghent University Central

Library. This was the first CD-ROM local area network in a Belgian research

library.

1991 1993 Leadership, coordination, and implementation of the Bibinfo solution on the Ghent

University network. Bibinfo was a public access system that provided access to over

30 Gb of locally stored information (mainly Abstracting & Indexing databases on

CD-ROM). Bibinfo was accessible from over 400 workstations in libraries and on

researchers' offices. At the time of its introduction, this system was unique at the

Belgian, European, and global level.

1991 1995 Project management, concept and realization of the second generation of the

Belgian Scientific Union Catalogue on CD-ROM (Collectieve Catalogus Belgi ) with

Alberic Regent and Jan Corthouts. SGML was introduced as a bibliographic

exchange format. As far as can be verified this was the first usage of SGML to

express MARC records. This SGML format later served as inspiration for

international efforts aimed at specifying MARC in XML.

1993 1994 After a worldwide survey, SilverPlatter selects the Ghent University Central Library

as one of six institutions, worldwide for beta-testing of their Electronic Reference

Library, the first client-server solution for the consultation of Abstracting &

Indexing databases delivered on CD-ROM.

1994 1995 Initiation of the concept for a Web interface for the SilverPlatter Electronic

Reference Library (WebSPIRS), and collaboration with SilverPlatter for the

realization.

1995 1996 Project Management for the selection process and the implementation of a new

library housekeeping system for Ghent University, including compilation of the

request for proposals, evaluation of proposals, market study, on-site visits. Aleph

500 from Ex Libris is selected and Ghent University becomes the first library,

worldwide, to make it operational.

1996 1997 Project management, concept and realization of the third generation of the Belgian

Scientific Union Catalogue on CD-ROM (Collectieve Catalogus Belgi ), with Jan

Corthouts. This becomes the first union catalogue in the world in the SilverPlatter

format. With this version, a student-edition of the union catalogue was introduced,

available for 30 $.

1996 Invited to become member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the Institute for

Scientific Information (ISI) and later also for Thomson-Reuters Scientific. The

Board consists of scholarly communication experts, including William Y. Arms,

Blaise Cronin, Joshua Lederberg, Christine Borgman, Liz Lyon.

1996 Onwards Lecturer at the annual TICER Summer School. On several occasions, participants

rate my contributions as best lecturer or best content .

1997 Realization of the link-to-holdings facility between the SilverPlatter Electronic

Reference Library and Aleph 500, based on ideas introduced in 1993.

1997 Project management, concept and realization of the Executive Lounge, a fully Web-

based library portal that implements new visions of library services to end-users.

Immediately after its launch, a Belgian Internet provider elects the Executive

Lounge site of the month .

1997 1998 Project management for the Ghent University component of the Elektron project

April 2012 2 / 24

Herbert Van de Sompel Curriculum Vitae

funded by the Flemish Government. Elektron aimed at the provision of electronic

library services to a broad user community in Flanders.

1998 Grant from the Belgian Science Foundation to dedicate a full year on Ph.D. research

(Bijzondere Doctoraatsbeurs).

1998 Conceptualization and initial realization of the context-sensitive, dynamic linking

framework that would later become OpenURL and SFX.

1999 Initiation of the call for collaboration in the Universal Preprint Service Initiative,

with Paul Ginsparg (creator of the Physics preprint server arXiv.org) and Rick Luce

(then director of the Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory).

Fundraising for and organization of the first meeting held in Santa Fe, October

1999, which became a major catalyst for the Open Access movement.

1999 Conceptualization and realization of an advanced version of the context-sensitive,

dynamic linking framework that would later become OpenURL and SFX. With

Patrick Hochstenbach and Lieve Rottiers. The feasibility experiment includes Ghent

University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Wiley, American Physical Society,

arXiv.org, etc.

2000 Initiation of the Open Archives Initiative and release of the Santa Fe Convention

with Carl Lagoze. The Open Archives Initiative becomes a major catalyst for the

Open Access movement.

2000 Ex Libris acquires the SFX linking server software from Ghent University. SFX is

beta-tested at Harvard University, Caltech, Indiana University, Vanderbilt University

and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. SFX is currently still widely used,

worldwide, and competing OpenURL linking servers have emerged.

2000 Public release of the OpenURL draft, an interoperability specification for dynamic,

context-sensitive linking. In the course of 2000, several companies in the

information industry implement OpenURL (ISI, Ebsco Publishing, Institute of

Physics Publishing, SilverPlatter, Bell&Howell Information and Learning, ingenta, H

W Wilson, Swets Blackwell, the Gale Group, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts).

2000 Invited to become member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Online

Computer Library Center (OCLC).

2000 2002 Initiation, coordination, and contribution to the effort to create the Open Archives

Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). The protocol becomes

widely adopted by libraries, repositories, publishers, and Web portals for the

exchange of metadata.

2001 2005 Major contributor to the ANSI/NISO Z39.88-2004 Standard OpenURL

Framework for Context-Sensitive Services . The standard is based on

aforementioned concepts regarding dynamic and context-sensitive linking and

becomes widely adopted.

2002 2005 Conceptualization, coordination, and realization of the bX article recommender

service with Johan Bollen. The system leverages usage logs recorded by OpenURL

linking servers to generate recommendations. Ex Libris acquires the system from

the Los Alamos National Laboratory and deploys it globally.

2004 Conceptualization, coordination, and realization of the aDORe repository software

that is designed and developed to be a long term digital asset repository for the

Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The design attracts

international attention because of its highly modular nature.

2006 2008 Research into alternative metrics for the assessment of scholarly impact, with Johan

Bollen, in the context of the MESUR project. The project is the first to scientifically

show that scholarly usage data exhibits a meaningful structure that can be leveraged

for the definition of impact metrics. The MESUR results are a significant catalyst for

a variety of efforts aimed at defining new impact metrics, including as alt.metrics.

2006 2008 Initiation, coordination, and contribution to the effort to create the Open Archives

Initiative Object Reuse and Exchange specification (OAI-ORE). The protocol s

adoption is growing steadily in scientific data infrastructures, cultural heritage

services, and linked data applications.

2007 2008 Coordination of the effort to create the open source djatoka image server. The

server becomes widely used, among others, in digital humanities projects.
