Established and built the American Society for Microbiology (ASM)
Communications Department. Work resulted in positioning ASM as a primary authority in life sciences and major media coverage of ASM activities, with over 7,000 online media citations tracked annually.
Conceived and implemented the Clean Hands Campaign, award-winning national public education effort about the importance of hand washing in reducing spread of infectious diseases. Reported results of observational surveys of hand washing behavior led to nationwide awareness of ASM. Over the 16 years of the existence,of this hallmark program, hand washing awareness and behavior have greatlyimproved. Conceived and developed MicrobeWorld.org, award-winning interactive education and information site.

Created MicrobeWorld Radio, daily 90-second feature heard on public radio throughout the United States.
Led participation in two USA Science and Engineering Festivals, including exhibit design and development, interactive activities, and volunteer participation.
Established Milestones in Microbiology program to provide public and

Organized three consecutive One Health symposia at annual AAAS meeting
focusing on interrelationships among humans, animals, and the environment relevant to infectious disease emergence, ecology, and surveillance.
Directed ASMs year-long centennial celebration activities for 1999, overseeing a $500,000 budget, coordinated special events, obtained video greetings from the White House, developed exhibits and lecture sessions, and managed selection and marketing of commemorative items.
Led logo redesign effort and developed graphics standards, ensuring consistent brand identity across all ASM publications and appropriate use of Societys name and image.
Developed and implemented several initiatives to raise the profile of the
microbiological sciences and ASM among its target audiences, including science media.
Obtained funding for a Washington-based program for student science
journalists.
Established
annual Public Communications Award media and ASM/AAAS Mass Media Fellowship.
Collaborated with Yellowstone National Park to produce a film, narrated by
Walter Cronkite, for the visitors center on biological diversity within the Park and a brochure on microbial life in the Parks thermal features.
