Abstract
The interface design of TOUCH application is a new challenge for UI designers. Due to the lack of
related cases and guidelines, designers rely more on their subjective experiences than objective tested
knowledge. This might results in potential cognitive gaps between designers and users, and causes usability
problems. Hence, we adopt Think Aloud Protocol, a popular cognitive approach for design study, to tackle
this issue. In this research, we invite three subjects and conduct experiments focusing on issues of visual
layouts and operational flows. After coding and analyzing, we figure out that this cognitive approach did
effectively identify cognitive gaps. These gaps are 1) the designed layout representing flattened system
structure did achieve high accuracy and low learning curve, 2) Z type operational flow didn t effectively
reach designers original goals. Eventually, these research results could not only be reflection for this
specific design but also preliminary references for further investigation.
