Designed, installed configured and maintain a multipurpose server that we use in the lab as a tool server. This is a kickstart server, as well web, FTP, TFTP and NFS server.Designed, installed and maintain two blogs using WordPress and one Wiki using TWiki Wiki and maintain the MySQL database used by WordPress. As both a tester and lab administrator, use tools such as MTR and TCPDump to identify and resolve TCP/IP problems.

State of NC June 2001 to July 2006

NCMail Service ManagerTeam Lead for the NCMail email service for the State of North Carolina.Maintained an e-mail system with over 30,000 users. The primary platform was Sun Enterprise class servers and Red Hat Linux on Intel workstations and administrative web servers. Used Critical Path Messaging Server as the e-mail platform and Critical Path Directory Server (LDAP). Developed and maintained the Perl CGI programs used to administer the email system. Most of the programs were written in Perl, with some BASH and Korn shell scripts. Wrote many of the scripts that provided the administrative interface into the NCMail system. Many of the scripts provided a great deal more automation to processes than previous scripts and saved over 40 hours of administrative time per month. Implemented Subversion as version control software in order to manage contributions from multiple developers.Designed, installed and administered the Red Hat Linux web servers that served as the administrative interface to the NCMail systems in both the Production and Test environments. Maintained the operating system by installing needed patches and performing upgrades when necessary using various monitoring tools to ensure the correct and efficient operation of these servers. Created and maintained on-line web-based documentation for our scripts and procedures. No documentation was previously kept. Switched from the Critical Path software for use with Mailing Lists and moved to Mailman, which provided a better administrator and user interface, and was much easier to maintain. Participated in an initial pilot project of Linux on the Mainframe (IBM Z-series). I was able to move our Administrative server from Intel to the mainframe in 1 hour using disaster recovery backups and making 1 configuration change to Apache.Participated in writing the Best Practices and Installation Guidelines for Linux for the State of North Carolina. Served as liaison to the internal NCMail Users Group as well as the individual agencies using NCMail.

Red Hat, Inc January 2001 to June 2001

InstructorProvided training to users and administrators of Red Hat Linux including all of the RHCE track courses from the RH133 course for new users of Linux through the RH300 RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) Fast Track course. Administered the RHCE examination. This test is one of the few meaningful tests in the industry as it is Performance based. Traveled to many locations around the country and set up classrooms for and then trained students on the RHCE track courses. Each classroom had to be set up from scratch each week. I installed the instructor s system to provide DHCP, NFS and DNS services. After installing the instructor s system, I used it as a kickstart server to install up to twenty student workstations. All of this usually took less than two hours from start to finish. Due to unique traits of each classroom, it was necessary to troubleshoot classroom network and configuration issues each week.Supported the students to help them through the myriad of problems they can get themselves into as they do everything from user, system, network, and security administration to DNS, Samba, and Apache configuration. Collaborated with the other instructors to enhance the presentation and lab content of existing courses and assisted with development of significant course revisions for new Red Hat distributions.

Senior Network Engineer IVDetermined new technology strategies and directions for Network MCI and for providing level 2 support on Intel servers. This was a very intense 24 7 operation with two hundred Intel based servers and thousands of Intel based workstations. MCI also had many different flavors of Unix. Began working with Solaris servers and Red Hat Linux during this time as we looked for alternatives to Windows.Originally hired for and responsible for cleaning up a very fragile and down level OS/2 domain structure to significantly reduce network and server downtime and crashes which were a weekly occurrence. After November of 1997, there was only one server crash, and that was a hardware problem.Installed SystemView on many key servers to provide proactive monitoring of the servers in the domain.

Used Lotus Domino as a web server and SMTP e-mail server with Ethernet connection to an ISDN router to connect to the Internet. This particular Notes Domino server was used to host multiple virtual web sites. LAN Distance Remote Access and SystemView is used on a ThinkPad for remote administration and management. The other systems are used for testing new configurations and software development. Run several WordPress blogs on my web server and maintain the MySQL database used by Wordpress. I built my last several computer systems from parts, not to save money, but rather because it was more fun and I did not have to get a bunch of stuff I did not need.
