braries of the 9 University of California campuses. The University of California Union Catalog is one
of the largest library catalogs in the country, with over 23 million items representing 10 million
titles. Until 2002, it also housed eight in-house databases of journal citations totaling 40 million
records.
Project design and leadership For projects lasting 12 or more months with a team of 4-6
programmers. Analysis of each new source of bibliographic metadata; develop metadata cross-
walks to internal database format; development of specialized indexing routines for the subject
matter; design of a production flow for database update.
Metadata development and translation. Development of processing programs for a wide
variety of bibliographic metadata. Included data analysis, program specification, creation of index-
ing algorithms, translation to standard character sets, including MARC8 and Unicode.
Database development. Design, write specifications, and create test environment for new
databases and input sources.
Data modeling. For bibliographic, textual and numeric data resources.
Standards. Represent the University in national standards forums primarily relating to metadata
and digital libraries. Served as a member of the MARC standards committee and represent the
University to that group for about fifteen years total. Member of NISO committee AX for the
development of the OpenURL standard.
Technology Work on mainframe, PC and UNIX platforms. A working knowledge of a variety of

programming languages and tools, such as C, C++, Java, Perl, HTML. Extensive use of biblio-
graphic data formats such as MARC, METS, OpenURL, and variety of character sets, including
Unicode.
