OBJECTIVE
Managerial position using my supervisory skills and analytical experience with
instrumentation and computers to solve problems in Process Engineering,
Quality
Assurance, Analytical Chemistry, or Materials evaluation.
SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE
B.S. Degree in Chemistry with extensive experience in all phases of industrial
chemistry. Proven record of accomplishments in quality assurance, process
development, materials and process engineering, and new product research.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
QUANTUM MATERIALS, DEXTER CORP
. (1995 - Present)
SUPERVISOR
- Incoming Quality Control/Analytical Services
* Supervise 4 chemists.
* Improved lab efficiency (>99% of requests completed within 6 days).
* Responsible for supplier management and supplier communication, including
monthly ratings, rejection notification and specification change notices.
* Developed new methods to support new products and technical services
support.
* Revised documentation system to reduce paperwork and improve communications.
* Developed and manage Chemical Inventory system to track all chemicals within
the facility.
* Developed On-line Order Entry and Acknowledgement system.
* Employee of the Quarter in 2Q 96 and 3Q 97.
PBH, PILKINGTON VISIONCARE USA (1990 - 1995)
MANAGER
- Materials Assurance
* Directed the work of 3 chemists, 2 microbiologists and 3 technicians.
* Developed new HPLC procedures for quantitating remaining monomers in our
products.
* Designed and wrote database system to track and record testing for all
polymer
types. This includes a standardized report system that increased accuracy and
reduced time from 4 man-hours to 1 minute.
* Completely overhauled the document system to include test methods and
requirements, as well as approved vendors, sampling plans and pertinent
storage
conditions, in preparation for ISO 9000 certification.
* Expedited transfer of new polymer manufacturing resulting in $400,000
savings.
GENERAL DYNAMICS, CONVAIR DIVISION (1985 - 1990)
SCIENTIST - Chemical Technology, Materials and Process Engineering
* Programmed computers to reduce laboratory turnaround times, improve
productivity, as well as enhance information flow. Fluent with numerous
software programs and programming (DOS, Basic, Fortran) on several types of
IBM
and Apple computers.
* Evaluated composites, polymers and adhesives to identify appropriate cures
and
possible problems using Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Thermogravimetric
and
Thermomechanical Analyzers, and Dynamic Rheometer.
* Supervised 2 lab technicians in Organic Materials Laboratory, testing all
sealants, adhesives and coatings used in Cruise missiles, Atlas rockets and
other aerospace programs.
* Metallurgical evaluation using Emission Spectroscopy (both ICP and
Arc/Spark)
and corrosion chemistry analysis.
* Analyzed metal finishing process and plating solutions via both instrumental
(Atomic Absorption, GC/MS, Ion Chromatography and Specific Ion Electrodes) and
wet chemical techniques.
KELCO, DIVISION OF MERCK AND CO., INC
. (1974 - 1985)
CHEMIST - Research
* Evaluated all prospective new products for rheological properties by
measuring
viscosity in different solutions and different concentrations,
pseudoplasticity,
yield point, and compatibility or synergism with other gums.
* Engineered new processes to modify specific physical or rheological
properties
(i.e., increase viscosity, improve dispersibility, change color, change salt
form, etc.).
* Developed new products with different rheological properties by modifying
the
production process (i.e., ultrafiltration, sonication, chemical treatments,
etc.).
* Designed laboratory scale ultrafiltration apparatus for use in process
development work with Kelco's existing and future products.
* Programmed computer (HP 9826) and calculator (HP 41CV, TI 59) to acquire and
analyze information obtained from instruments (Brookfield Digital Viscometer
and
Instron Testing Machine).
* Trained all section personnel (7 chemists, 3 technicians and supervisory
staff) in use of computers (HP 150, HP 9826) and sophisticated instruments
(Instron, Ultrafiltration and sonication units, Brookfield and Fann
Viscometers)
to achieve significant time savings (approximately 90%) and increase
productivity.
PUBLICATIONS AND AFFILIATIONS
* Co-authored a paper, "Modifications of Starch Gels by Xanthan Gum", which
was
presented at the American Association of Cereal Chemists 66th Annual Meeting
in
1981.
* Member of the American Chemical Society.
ACADEMIC EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science
in Chemistry, 1978 - San Diego State University,
California
* Included extensive hands-on training with computers and many analytical
instruments (GC, IR, UV-Vis, NMR, Mass Spec, Emission Spectrometer, etc.).
Certificate in Modern Analytical Chemistry, 1986 - SDSU, CA
* 2 year certificate program. Further training in analytical chemistry with
emphasis on modern instrumentation and techniques.
