Objectives: My goal as a new graduate is to practice mixed/large animal medicine in Oregon. Species that I am most enthusiastic to work with include bovine, equine, small ruminant and camelids. I feel as though my qualifications, education and experiences have well prepared me for this type of practice although I know I have much more to learn. A good mentor is critical to me in deciding where I would like to work. I know there is a tremendous learning curve during the first year in practice and I would like to facilitate that with excellent mentorship. I look forward to the challenges of rural private practice and hope in the future I will be a role model as a veterinarian and community member.

Personal Interests: I am interested in most aspects of large animal medicine, although I have a special interest in camelid medicine. The variety of species treated and variability in clinical practices attracts me to rural veterinary service. I love the outdoors which is another of the many aspects of large animal medicine that attracted me to this profession. In my spare time I enjoy both road and mountain biking as well hiking and camping.
Veterinary Experience: Treatment Crew: Food Animal Medicine. UC Davis SVM Academic Year 2007-2008 Species involved: bovine, ovine, caprine, porcine. Responsibilities: Provided technical support during holidays in the food animal barn, receive patients, work with clinicians and residents to perform procedures and daily treatments. Animal Health Technician: LyChron LLC. Mountain View, CA 6/07-9/07 Species involved: Porcine, Ovine, Caprine, Canine. Responsibilities: Animal health technician at a busy biomedical research facility; primary responsibilities were to prepare animals for surgical procedures, monitor anesthesia, assist surgeons and recover animals from anesthesia. Other responsibilities included maintaining GLP records, performing daily treatments and supervising experimental protocol. Animal Health Technician: Center for Laboratory Animal Health. UC Davis 6/04 -1/06 Species involved: Murine, canine, feline, bovine, ovine, and occasional avian and reptiles. Responsibilities: Technician for the veterinary service that cares for the majority of laboratory animals on the UC Davis campus. Performed treatments on various lab animal species, assisted investigators with procedures, prepared animals for surgery and monitored anesthesia, taught handling and basic procedures to PI’s and students and maintained records. Other duties included performing literature searches, cleaning surgical supplies, making surgical packs, and general clinic organization. Externship: Oregon State University. SVM 6/07-9/07 Species involved: Equine, Camelid, Bovine, Caprine. Responsibilities: Gained advance experience in areas of interest in senior clinics as an underclassman. UC Davis Sierra field station: UC Davis 2006-2008. Sporadic visits to beef research station. Activities included herding cattle via horseback, branding calves, castration of calves, vaccination, pink eye evaluation and treatment, heifer processing, pregnancy diagnosis.
Animal Experience: Student intern: Transgenic Goat Project. UC Davis 1/2005-3/2005 Observed embryo transfer surgeries and assisted with recovery of goats from anesthesia. Monitored does, assisted during kidding and sampling from kids, fed kids, assisted with husbandry and synchronizing of does. Volunteer: James’ Annual Sheep Shearing. Sheridan, OR. Annually, 1993-present Responsibilities: Catching sheep, trimming hooves, deworming, vaccination, and display of fleece for sale.
