Primary Research - E cient Large Scale Machine Learning using Stochastic Mini-Batches
Statistical Optimization: We devise principled and statistically motivated techniques to highly speed up
learning algorithms (such as NMF, GLMs, SVMs etc) using frequentist hypothesis tests to determine the
amount of data required in each iteration to make parameter updates.
Approximate Bayesian Inference: We develop approximate sampling algorithms that require only
computations proportional to the size of a mini-batch to generate each sample from a posterior
distribution, instead of the whole dataset as in traditional MCMC algorithms.
