Accomplishments in current position: I was recruited by Transax as
Network Manager
to do several major projects:
Design and implement coprorate Web pages, servers and internet access
including interactive links to database and email systems, plus
intranet development.
This 18 -month project is still in process, and involves many aspects
of bringing the company online. The Vivat pages at
www.vivat.co.uk/taxfree are the first delivery, and are hosted on
Rednets web servers. Database lookups for Transax clients, our own
UNIX-based web server, and several firewall systems are still being
implemented. A full intranet system is in testing within IS, and
online procedures and staff diagrams have been moved from Adobe
Acrobats .pdf to HTML format. Corporate units are working on staff
homepages which will be linked to procedures and other intranet online
information.
Modernize the international network including hardware, software,
workstations, Novell and Mac servers, 3Com hubs, WAN segments, etc.
I implemented the first hardware standards for Mac/PCs, and chose
equipment that was highly-rated and expandable enough to handle nearly
two years worth of upgrades to Windows 95, Mac System 7.5.3,
Microsoft Office 4.2/95, and various applications. A little
future-proofing has paid off in vastly reduced costs for upgrading
software and hardware. A 3-month project delivered a new Compaq
Proliant 4500 Novell server to replace the elderly and failing UK
DeskPro server. Complete reorganization of the UK datafiles, storage
limits, data recovery, and all associated Novell systems was tied to
this system. Servers in New Zealand and Australia were also upgraded
and replaced.
Migrate the enterprize from Microsoft Mail to QuickMail implement all
features of the improved interface and functionality of QuickMail.
This 4-month project to deliver QuickMail was completed in May 96, and
included all elements of a big-bang jump from MS Mail, memory
upgrades for many PCs for the Windows QuickMail product, training
developed and delivered in-house for all employees, creation of many
custom email forms, and configuration of our own Internet Domain and
UUCP gateway system. Each user was given full Internet email
capabilities at minimum cost, and servers in England, Australia and
New Zealand were linked via Kilostream lines.
Provide remote WAN access and improve speed, security systems and
firewalls, including Mac access, UNIX-based BBS systems to reduce
direct client access to databases, and ISDN links to remote sites and
the Internet.
A Shiva LanRoverE was installed and configured in November 95 to allow
WAN dial-in and dial-out, allowing PCs to connect remotely for email,
UNIX access, Novell administration, telecommuting and filesharing.
Dial-out functions provide full Internet access over the UK LAN,
reducing costs for modems and analogue lines. ISDN links to the
Internet and to clients were also delivered to the graphics unit and
the Managing Directors home office near Worcester. UNIX firewall
systems were proposed and developed to allow users to upload financial
datafiles to a BBS rather than directly modify databases.
