PROJECTS AND EXPERIENCE
Research Assistant, MIT Media Lab, Cambridge, MA 2001-Present
Most projects described below were completed under the auspices of the MIT Media Laboratory, Opera of the Future Group,
where I completed my Master of Science in June 2007. From 2001-2004 I worked there as an undergraduate before begin-
ning my graduate work in 2004. Most of the projects below are described in further detail at
http://web.media.mit.edu/~revrev/research.html
Laser Harp, Music Controller Design and Fabrication, Project Manager December 2006-Present
Led a team to design and fabricate a novel electronic musical instrument controller based on laser photo-sensing and range-
nding. Researched laser range- nding techniques (triangulation, re ection intensity) and sensor technology to build a low-
cost, high-precision array of laser range- nders for controlling The Chandelier (see below). Coordinated day-to-day activities
such as material acquisition, personnel management (three person team of fabricators and engineers), prototype presentation
for fundraising, etc. Engineering tasks included laser power design, optics design, circuit layout and fabrication, sensor
alignment, and software (Atmel microcontroller C, MAX/MSP).
The Chandelier, Robotic Musical Instrument Design and Fabrication, Project Manager 2006-Present
Led a team of designers, engineers, and fabricators to build a large-scale robotic musical instrument. The Chandelier is a
string instrument measuring nearly 12 feet long, and sounded by robotic actuators such as solenoid hammers, spinning DC
motors, rosined wheels, and electromagnets. Day-to-day activities included personnel management, material acquisition,
etc. Engineering tasks included structural engineering, electronic circuit design, circuit fabrication, metal and plastic machin-
ing (waterjet, lasercutter, lathe), motor/solenoid controller design, control software (MAX/MSP), microcontroller software (At-
mel chips - C, wiring), etc.
Skellig Promotional Video, High-De nition Video and Sound Recording and Edit January 2007
Oversaw technical aspects of HD1080i multicamera video shoot and sound recording. Audio recording was completed prior
to video shoot for lip sync. Multitrack recording of synthesized musical accompaniment and three opera singers in Digital
Performer. Oversaw audio/video sync during video shoot. Oversaw Sony HD camera operation and settings. Logged and
captured video assets after shoot. Edited video in Final Cut Pro to soundtrack. Applied digital effects and transitions. Cor-
rected timings for sync. Encoded completed edit for DVD authoring and delivery.
Junior Achievement Promotional Video, Video and Sound Edit November 2006
Assembled a short invitational video and soundtrack in Final Cut Pro and Digital Performer. Performed asset collection, or-
ganization, and logging. Encoded nal edit for DVD authoring, and assembled materials for package printing. Worked with
client through several draft stages and revisions before nal DVD duplication.
Fire Hose, High-De nition Video and 5.1 Surround Sound May 2006
Oversaw complete production of this project, including HD1080i video shooting, asset import and logging, video edit in
Final Cut Pro, color correction, export to Digital Performer, original sound recording and mixing, 5.1 channel output, trans-
coding to Dolby Digital 5.1, resyncing to video, nal DVD encoding and authoring, and public presentation of the work.
Another Life, Sound Design and Live Surround Sound Production March 2006
Assisted composer Tod Machover with digital recording of synthesized sound and mixing to quad surround as well as stereo
folddown. Final output transfered to Kontakt sampling software and mapped to MIDI keyboard for live triggering in perform-
ance. Performed live sound engineering in quad surround.
...but not simpler Sound Design and Live Surround Sound Production January 2006
Assisted the Ying Quartet with the hour-long concert ...but not simpler, featuring various electronic augmentations of clas-
sical pieces. Assembled surround recordings of electronic interludes by Tod Machover, and programmed them for control via
MIDI. Recorded Ying Quartet in studio, edited and mixed recording into triggerable segments. Developed real-time software
in MAX/MSP for surround panning of live instruments, controllable via MIDI. Mixed live sound and worked with videogra-
pher Joan Logue in video production.

Jeux Deux, Interactive Piano Software Design June 2005
Developed interactive software in MAX/MSP for real-time augmentation, improvisation, and superhuman musical invention
on a Yamaha Disklavier player piano. Worked closely with composer Tod Machover to develop musical processes that trans-
form a player s notes into new music that is subsequently played back to the piano. Designed and assembled networked
computer setup for live performance, utilizing Open Sound Control. Worked closely with artist Marc Downie to allow for
real-time data ow from music software to graphics software for live computer graphics generation.
Royal Academy of Music Hyperbow Exchange, Software Consultant and Liason January-June 2005
Served as software designer, consultant, and liason for a unique exchange between the MIT Media Lab and the Royal Acad-
emy of Music in London, England. Worked with hardware designer Diana Young to develop software for the Hyperbow, a
violin bow out tted with a vast array of sensors for interfacing traditional cellos with computerized sound.
Marshall Fields Flower Garden, Large-Scale Installation Design March 2005
Oversaw development and deployment of a large-scale electronic music installation in a warehouse-sized ower garden at
the Marshall Fields department store in Minneapolis. Recorded autist Patti Monson and assisted with editing and mixing of
music with synthesized accompaniment. Edited and mixed 40 channels of prerecorded ambient sound for overhead play-
back. Designed interactive touchpad software for controlling musical variations on four Yamaha Disklavier player pianos.
Installed peripheral sound system in hall to augment overhead speakers. Assisted with installation of interactive shaper
instruments that play sampled environmental sounds. Assisted with installation of electronic windchimes activated by pin-
wheels.
Toy Symphony, Sound Design and Touring Show Design 2002-2003
Designed performance system, including a vast array of synthesizers, computers, and sound design equipment, for use in a
symphony orchestra concert with children performing electronic music toys. Developed hyperviolin software for renowned
violinist Joshua Bell with Tristan Jehan. Engineered live sound at concerts in Berlin (Kent Nagano, Deutsches Symphonie
Orchester), Dublin (Gerhard Markson, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland), Glasgow (Gerhard Markson, BBC Scottish
Symphony Orchestra), Boston and New York City (Gil Rose, Boston Modern Orchestra Project). Website:
