Dissertation Abstract

According to John Lukacs (key scholar on Hitler and Nazism), German people's views on Hitler and Nazism once got examined right after the fall the Third Reich in the 1950s but this subject has lost its appeal since then. How do Germans nowadays, specifically those young ones raised in the "New Germany" after the fall of the Berlin Wall, think of Hitler and their country's Nazi legacy

This dissertation is to explore how six young Germans growing up in the new "unified Germany" interpret two films' representations of Hitler and Nazism.

Chapter 1 is a typical textual analysis informed by theories and analytical techniques from literary and film studies, examining how two production companies' basic political positions are reflected through numerous filmic semiotics and elements used in the films.

Chapter 2 explores the financing of those two films, in particular how the financing might determine the two production companies' political stances.

Chapter 3 looks at how a group of young Germans approaches film texts in general and interprets two biographical films of Hitler (an Emmy's nominee Hitler: the Rise of Evil (2003) and an Oscar winner Der Untergang (2004).

Chapter 4 is the researcher's self-analysis, a critical look on his process of conducting the research project.

The basic argument is that filmmakers need to move away from a pure demonization of Hitler because now the audience is calling for a better-rounded depiction of Germany's former Fuehrer.
