QUALIFIED FOR AND SEEKING POSITION IN

COMMUNITY PLANNING DIRECTOR

-Most powerful lesson learned... acting with integrity is based in a firm understanding of who I Am.-

I am an innovative and non-traditional individual with over twenty-five years` experience in city planning leadership.

I know firsthand the value of listening, collaboration and consensus in the creative process of

building a community that reflects and serves the needs and wishes of its leaders and citizens.

MY BASIS, MY VALUE - WHO I AM

* Communication - is the brokering of ideas, building support and selling it! Effective communication skills include an interplay and flow of thought - a 2-way talker/listener exchange, an appeal to broad and diverse groups of different sizes, one-on-one dialogue, varied venues. Questions to be asked: Who is my audience

What is the will of the people

What can I do to pull together community

Communication is a value... a working commitment to respect, tolerance, perseverance and understanding. Communication is cutting-edge technology - the greatly improved ability to exchange information and understand one another through many more options such as social media, YouTube, Twitter, FaceBook.

* Vision and Strategic Thinking - Can you see the future, where you`re going

Is it meaningful

Does it capture what you`ve dreamed of

A Vision is a realistic, credible, attractive future for an organization. (Burt Nanus). A Vision creates new energy by generating hope, excitement for the future, a belief that you can make it possible. Bold strategic thinking transforms the `what` of the vision into the how... how do we get there. Both vision and strategic thinking arise from our core beliefs and values. It is essential to know what that is... . Identifying and understanding those values collectively then transforms vision to interconnected strategy to reality - a reality that stakeholders claim as their own, easily.

* Systems Approach - A systems approach is endemic to successful strategic thinking. A Planner is the catalyst in a world that is a system of systems. Interconnectedness and elasticity are the properties that hold the fabric of life together. Find it, connect it and we can split the atom.

* Authenticity - is a personal and professional inner essence from which come my credibility, my believability... it includes being real, truthful, honest, humble - strengths that pervade all I Am and do. Authenticity means having the courage to do the right thing even at your own peril. It means I listen to you, trust you, build with you, become part of you. I share your passion and want to go where you want to go.

* Ideas, Concepts, Research - appreciating the deep respect for knowledge that needs to be gathered and then understood. -No one is as smart as everyone.- (Ken Blanchard) Knowledge has to come from all over and all levels. That means interaction happens one-on-one, in citizen groups, between staff members, among top officials and executives. Take an idea, transpose it, flip it upside down, have fun with it... see where it can take you in conventional and unconventional ways.

* Solution-based troubleshooting - Experience, communication, broad-based knowledge and passion are what`s required to be a sharp, creative, innovative macro-thinker who scans the universe of problem-solving ideas to formulate and pull-together potential solutions in the heat of the moment and confrontation.

* Mentoring requires the important components of experience, strength and hope. In team settings, management positions, with people working for you, people you are serving... all have to be mentored, with calm, clarity and respect, to understand what their values are and how those values play an important and empowering role in their lives. The goal is not just buy-in but rather integration and ownership so that they can manifest them uniquely in their own way.

* Leadership - all leadership is about letting them go... unlocking individual talent, passions and energy and using them collectively. I call this `splitting the atom`, unleashing and capturing the enormous power of human capability. All team leaders, in their own right, commandeer resources and empower others. Leadership is facilitating, equipping... clearing roadblocks, opening up avenues for action, scheduling, mentoring, reaching out, motivating, communicating.

* End-to-end project involvement - creation to completion. Managing risk, budget, human resources... guiding an evolving idea or concept to reality with strong clarity. Knowing when and how be a managed risk taker is critical...sometimes we don`t know exactly what the end result will be, but trusting that a well-founded discovery process could yield more and better results than a strictly controlled method.

* Decision-maker - a visionary pragmatist, a dual visionary/strategist balancing equal parts, maximizing this, minimizing that.

Analyzing what it`s going to cost, using mental recombination to understand all the relationships and bring all variables together to achieve unity of purpose.

PLANNING PROFICIENCIES
