RESEARCH/INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

Graduate Technical Intern, Intel Corporation May 2011 - Aug 2011

Wireless Communications Lab/Wireless Multimedia Solutions Hillsboro, OR

- Topic: End-to-end Flexible Prototyping Platform for Cross-layer Video Optimization

Implemented adaptive modulation and coding, puncturing, interleaving, and forward error correc-

tion as part of the 802.11n PHY layer on FPGA using Xilinx System Generator

Developed a fast interface between the FPGA and an 802.11 software MAC over the cPCI bus to

integrate the Tx/Rx chain into the end-to-end video streaming system

Customized the PHY on the FPGA to support multirate operation with a single clock and avoid

overclocking using bu er handshake mechanisms

Graduate Research Assistant, University of Texas at Austin Nov 2010 - Present

Wireless Systems Innovation Lab - Advisor: Prof. Robert Heath Austin, TX

- Topic: A Cross-Layer Design for Perceptual Optimization of H.264/SVC

Proposed a new QoS-to-QoE mapping technique for SVC that maps per-layer packet losses to a

measure of objective video quality degradation

Developed a novel unequal error protection technique that is used to provide video-aware adaptive

MCS selection at the PHY layer

Proposed an algorithm to jointly adapt the temporal- and quality-scalable codec with the wireless

resources to avoid playback bu er starvation

Abdel Khalek, Amin Resume

Graduate Research Assistant, American University of Beirut Feb 2009 - Jun 2010

Wireless Communications Group - Advisor: Prof. Zaher Dawy Lebanon

- Topic: Cooperative Video Distribution with Statistical QoS Provisions

Developed procedures to provide end-to-end statistical delay bounds for content distribution over

multihop networks based on queuing theory and the e ective capacity link-layer model

Solved for the optimal resource allocation for video frames over general network ows to minimize

energy consumption in the network subject to statistical end-to-end delay bounds

Proposed low complexity approximation algorithms for selecting the most energy-e cient distribu-

tion scheme for video multicast from the entire set of candidate network ows

- Topic: UMTS Radio Network Planning with Quality of Service Constraints

Proposed an algorithm for optimal deployment of UMTS base stations to minimize the total BS

transmit power while maintaining a satisfactory level of downlink SIR for all active connections

Developed an integer programming algorithm for selecting the minimum number of BSs that satisfy

coverage and quality constraints from a xed candidate BS set under SIR-based power control

Extended the algorithms to support location-based constraints, joint uplink/downlink planning

under stringent handset power limitations, and electromagnetic radiation constraints

Visiting Researcher, University of California, Berkeley, Jun 2009 - Sep 2009

Mobile Millennium Project - Supervisor: Prof. Alexandre Bayen Berkeley, CA

- Topic: Machine Learning Algorithms for Arterial Tra c Forecast

Implemented non-parametric arterial tra c forecast algorithms: K-nearest neighbors with distance

metric learning, and local linear regression with smoothing kernels

Evaluated existing logistic regression and STARMA forecasting models used to produce short-term

forecasts of spatio-temporal parameters on arterial road links

Filtered large-scale highway and arterial tra c micro-simulation data and participated in developing

techniques for queue length estimation at signalized intersections and virtual trip line placement

Intern, ALFA (Cellular Network Operator) Jun 2007 - Dec 2007

Radio Planning and Optimization Department Lebanon

- Topic: Targeted Mobile Services using Large-scale Cellular Data

Developed a Location-based Service that selectively sends automated location-based commercial

content SMSs to candidate subscribers selected using robust localization and tracking algorithms

Developed a Roaming Tra c Analyzer tool that performs PLMN-wide analysis on large-scale roam-

ing tra c according to compound subscriber and network criteria

Participated in GSM radio network planning and optimization and gained hands-on experience

with the operation and architecture of GSM networks
