Professional Experience:
Professor (Aug. 1990 - present), Agronomy Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural
Sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
Position responsibilities included leadership of a research and extension program in crop
water management. Research examined the effects of soil water deficits and other
environmental stresses on crop growth, physiology, development and yield. Research
focused on understanding the physiological responses of various species and genotypes of
crop plants to environmental stresses, with special emphasis on crop water relations as
affected by water deficits.
Department Chair and Professor (Jan. 1994 Sept. 2009), Agronomy Department, Institute of
Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
Position responsibilities included providing programmatic leadership and administrative
support to the multi-disciplinary research, extension, and teaching programs of the
Agronomy Department. Program leadership was provided for approximately 20 UF/IFAS
state faculty located at Gainesville and, through interaction and cooperation with various
Center Directors, for 15 UF/IFAS faculty located at seven research and education centers
across the state. Specific duties included budgetary and personnel management; faculty
recruitment and development; program development and coordination; liaison with state,
federal, and international agencies and cooperating units within IFAS and the university;
promotion of funding opportunities.
Interim Department Chair and Professor (May 1992 - Dec. 1993), Agronomy Department,
Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
Position responsibilities included administration of teaching, research, and extension
programs of the Agronomy Department.
Associate Professor (Sept. 1984 - Aug. 1990), Agronomy Department, Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
Research and extension in crop water management. Research on the effects of
environmental stresses on crop growth, physiology, and yield.
Assistant Professor (July, 1979 - Sept. 1984), Agronomy Department, Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
Research and extension in crop water management. Research on the effects of
environmental stresses on crop growth, physiology, and yield.
Graduate Research Assistant (Jan. 1976 - July 1979), Agronomy Department, University of
Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska.
Research focused on effects of osmotic stresses imposed at various growth stages on water
relations, photosynthesis, growth, and yield of grain sorghum.
Graduate Research Assistant (May 1974 - Jan. 1976), Agronomy Department, Texas Tech
University, Lubbock, Texas.
Research evaluated the interaction of light and water stresses on the water relations, growth
and yield of several grain sorghum hybrids.
Areas of Discipline Specialization:
Environmental stress physiology of agronomic crop plants; effects of water deficits on the
physiology, growth, development and yield of agronomic crops; adaptation of crops to
