EXPERIENCEKelco Consulting Inc., Naperville, IL April 1999 - PresentDatabase Administrator (Summer 02 - Present)For a major quick service restaurant company, managed and consolidated 15 to 20 Oracle databases running on 11 different servers onto 4 servers. These included production and development databases running various releases of Oracle's relational database, as well as Oracle Express. Migrated some of the databases to new releases. Installed various releases of Oracle's relational database software and Oracle Express on the new servers. Worked the corporate backup strategy onto these new servers. Cloned production databases to serve as development databases. Supported various production and development databases by monitoring and tuning the performance of the databases, creating new and modifying existing objects, and monitoring the security of the databases.
Database Administrator (Winter 00 - Spring 02)For a major insurance company, supported up to 25 Oracle databases. Installed Oracle 8i and migrated 7.3.4 databases to 8i. Created new instances of Oracle as needed to support development, training, and production requirements. Created snapshots to replicate data from one database to another. Worked with developers and end users to troubleshoot database issues. Tuned databases as needed. Refreshed training and development databases with baseline data to accommodate scheduling requirements. Developed, modified, and applied new database releases to remain in sync with application releases.
Database Administrator (Summer 99 - Winter 00)For a major communications company, supported up to 10 Oracle databases running various releases of Oracle 7 and Oracle 8. Installed Oracle software on new servers, and created new instances of Oracle on new and existing servers. Tuned new and existing databases to maximize performance. Created backup and recovery strategies for all of these databases, and created scripts to automate these backups. Generated miscellaneous reports from these databases using shell scripting, SQL, and PL/SQL.
Database Administrator/Data Analyst (Spring 99 - Summer 99)For an investment services company, modified the logical database design of a Web-based data warehousing application using ERWin. Developed the physical database using Oracle 8 from this logical model. This application served as a reporting vehicle for commercial clients involved in the trading of futures and options. Created hundreds of database objects to support this application. Tuned the application by writing stored procedures and partitioning large tables. Coordinated the conversion of data from NT to UNIX servers.
McDonald's Corporation, Oak Brook, IL January 1980 - March 1999Database Administrator/Data Analyst (May 97 - March 99)Using ERWin, developed approximately one half of the logical and physical design of an Oracle database for a restaurant site development system used by hundreds of clients nationwide. Created approximately 400 database objects in a system consisting of nearly 800 database objects. Tuned the objects to maximize performance. Continue to support further development to the system by creating additional objects or modifying existing objects to accommodate enhancements.
Developed the physical design of an Oracle database used to track people and their comments as they attend panels used to taste test new products. Built the data definition language (DDL) to create the 50 database objects used in the system, and turned the DDL over to an external company hired to write the application. Monitored performance issues encountered during the development phase. Created the database objects internally when the application was brought in-house for system testing. Tuned the objects to enhance performance.
Evaluated the Oracle database used in a customer satisfaction software package, determining how it differed from our shop standards and areas of potential problems. Implemented the database, which consists of almost 200 database objects. Modified many objects to enhance the performance seen by the users of the application. Converted the data from the old system to the new system.
Developed the logical and physical design of an Oracle database used to track and inventory the kitchen equipment used in company owned and franchised restaurants. This database is used by 50 regional offices to coordinate the purchase of new kitchen equipment as part of a new company initiative. Created the database objects used in the system. Fine tuned the objects to maximize performance.
Developed physical design for a system used to store data related to the CAD drawings for individual restaurants. Worked independently to create the 50 database objects that made up this system. Converted the data from the previous system to the new system.
Evaluated several tuning tools for Oracle databases. Recommended the purchase of Precise/SQL as the tool of choice to departmental management. Recommendation resulted in the purchase of the product.
Project Manager (August 90 - May 97)Managed a team of employees and consultants rewriting the corporate general ledger system. The system was written in COBOL, using APS, with DB2 and CICS. It interfaced with other systems, including some on a Tandem platform, and applications that ran on the ISP (in store processor) in each of our company owned restaurants.
Managed a team of employees and consultants developing and enhancing application software that ran on the ISP (in store processor). The ISP ran in each of our company owned restaurants and several thousand franchised restaurants. The software was written in C++ using a UNIX operating system and an ISAM database. Managed the control of releases that were sent to individual restaurants electronically or via tape.
Programming (August 84 - August 90)Analyzed, designed, coded, and supported software for new development and enhancements to existing applications. These applications included real estate tax systems, treasury systems, fixed assets, general ledger, corporate benefits, payroll, marketing, etc. These applications were written in COBOL using IMS DB/DC.
Made code modifications to a purchased payroll package used by Canadian offices and restaurants. Coded standalone programs which interface with the package. Supported the system remotely for our Canadian clients. The system was written in COBOL using IMS DB/DC.
