Alzheimer s Association - Washington DC – 2009-2011

Largest Alzheimer s disease organization in the world.

Associate Director, Advocacy

Oversaw the digital public affairs strategy for the organization. Led the largest grassroots recruitment efforts in the organization s history, resulting in more than doubling the size of their advocacy list in one year. Serve as a consultant type of role for the 75 chapters around the country, teaching them how to do online advocacy and encouraging best practices. Spearheaded the organization s grassroots mobilization in support of the National Alzheimer s Project Act, which was signed into law in January 2011. This is the largest piece of Alzheimer s legislation to ever pass Congress. Serve as the new media director for the related organizations, the Alzheimer s Impact Movement (501c4) and AIM PAC. This includes managing (and developing) the website, and all of their social media properties. Managed a CRM selection process and am leading the transition from Blackbaud to Convio. Lead all cross divisional efforts to incorporate advocacy into every facet of the organization. Designed and implemented new email designs and strategies across the organization, resulting in cleaner, more effective communications and increased response rates.

Grassroots Advocacy Manager

Responsible for strategic direction/management of international grassroots efforts and political action in support of LAF to engage public support and increase funding for cancer issues. Managed LAF s worldwide online advocacy program, writing all action alerts, coordinating campaigns with social media platforms, negotiating with vendors. Helped lead the development and launch of program in four languages. In the first two months more than 330K actions were taken and 200K new people signed upEstablished 500+ community-based grassroots programs with 100,000+ cancer advocates worldwide. Expanded U.S. operations to reach global audiences leading up to the 09 World Summit on Cancer taking place at the conclusion of the Tour of Ireland in 09. Trained 2000+ advocates in 2007/2008. Helped pioneer the LAF s social media program, which now has grown to one of the most successful programs in the non-profit industry. Also started Lance s involvement in social media, including setting up his twitter account which now has more than 3 million followers. Managed multi-million dollar budget, supervising numerous staff, interns, volunteers and consultants assisting LAF. Managed dozens of Lance Armstrong s public appearances, including planning and on-site coordination of schedules, logistics and communications. Example coordinated LAF arrangements for week-long Register s Annual Great Bike Ride across Iowa (RAGBRAI). This one event enabled Lance Armstrong to reach 40,000+ participants to motivate people on cancer issues.Led the coalition s grassroots efforts for Smoke-Free Texas. This included spearheading an online petition drive that gathered almost 10K signatures in 48 hours. Directed grassroots efforts to persuade voters to approve Proposition 15 campaign in Texas in fall 07, resulting in overwhelming victory – 67%. Measure will provide 3 billion dollars for cancer research. Organized arrangements for bus tour across Texas reaching 5,000 people, resulting in 100+ media hits. Conceptualized, developed and managed LIVESTRONGDay on 5/13/08 which raised almost a million dollars:

Initiated more than 640 events in all 50 states, 6 continents and more than 15 countries. Managed the deployment of all 60 LAF staff members to participate in different events around the country.Planned a national fly-around tour with Lance to NYC, Columbus, Denver and Las Vegas in one day with 6 different events.Assisted planning LIVESTRONG Presidential Cancer Forum in Iowa (8/07). Clinton, Edwards, Huckabee, Kucinich, Brownback and Richardson participated. Moderated by Chris Mathews, MSNBC.

Senior Director of Grassroots Advocacy, Pacific/Mountain Region

Responsible for direction of grassroots advocacy program for Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. Responsible for management/oversight of grassroots operations/personnel for ten states, including $50,000 budget, strategic plans, performance objectives.
