SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITIES

Digital library tool development and training: Co-PI/senior personnel on the Curriculum

Customization Service awards, acting as liaison to school districts and teacher advisory boards,

developing and conducting professional development trainings, overseeing content production and

integration, and managing evaluation activities. Co-designed and conducted participatory design-based

process to develop CCS functionality and interface with teachers, instructional designers, and software

engineers. Assist with development of NLP-supported learning environments by providing or facilitating

acquisition of data from human experts in science and education. Senior personnel and subcontractor PI

on the Center for Natural Language Processing, Syracuse University CASAA Project, developing tools to

aid in standards assignment and national-to-state standards correlations. Co-team lead on development of

the DLESE Collection System tool, conducting user studies and catalog training to collection builders for

DLESE and NSDL.

Teacher professional development: Design and conduct in-service and professional development

workshops for teachers focusing on integrating electronic learning resources and digital libraries services

into the classroom. Conduct face-to-face and webinar-based training sessions on use of the CCS. Project

manager and co-designer of the Earth and Space Science Technological Education Project, funded by

ATE of the National Science Foundation; a program that provided educators in grades 8-16 with training

and support for the classroom use of computer technologies such as GIS, image processing and GPS

(1997-2000).

Evaluation: Design and conduct community surveys and interviews for NSDL Technical Network

Services. Conduct teacher cognitive interviews on teacher content, curriculum and pedagogical

knowledge. Developed and conducted an evaluation focus group for It s About Time s revision of the

EarthComm curriculum and for AAAS Science Literacy Maps. Coordinated on-site visit and teacher

focus group for RAND s evaluation of NSDL. Designed and participated in evaluation of computer-

assisted judgments of resource quality and educational standards assignments.

Community activities: Local arrangements chair for the 2005 JCDL Annual meeting, Denver, CO.

Curriculum and program development: Subcontractor PI, core advisor and writer for the NSDL

Pathways Teachers Domain project, building the Earth and Space Science Collection and designing an

on-line teacher professional development course. Project manager and curriculum developer of a large

collaborative learning education research project (Kids as Global Scientists and Hurricane!) involving

the utilization of the Internet and data sharing in middle school science curricula.
