Metro Desk Editor

August 2012 present

One of two editors over the Metro desk. Oversees, mentors and directs ten reporters. Assigns stories to reporters and edits stories for AP style and general quality. Communicates with reporters, photographers and designers to provide high-quality art for each story. Publishes stories online and pushes content out through the @UniverseMetro twitter. Designs a page of the Tuesday Universe weekly in InDesign. Covers breaking news, attends press conferences and takes photographs as needed.

Key accomplishmentsSuccessfully broke news of Paul Ryan s visit to Provo in September. This included providing a detailed preview, attending and reporting on the fundraiser event and utilizing social media to push the news.Was asked to be a part of a panel on HuffPost Live for the segment Community Soundoffs.

Metro Desk Reporter over the Religion Beat

January April 2012

Reports on general stories and leads and focuses on stories with a focus on religion. Accepts assignments from the two Metro editors and researches story ideas. Able to cover any kind of story from quick turnaround to long-term investigative report.

Key accomplishmentsWas asked to attend the Associated Collegiate Press Journalism Conference in Seattle, Wash. by Professor Joel Campbell (then director of the Universe). Reported back to faculty and staff to discuss ways to utilize our online presence.Successfully covered my beat and additional stories while taking 14 credits at BYU and working as a secretary 20 hours a week.
