Automotive and Service Experience:

Experience in automotive repair for 5 years. The past 3 have included service and sales duties.

2 years experience at a high performance shop, both installing parts/engine assembly, as well as being the go-to customer rep. Similar principles apply to service/sales in the repair industry, only the numbers are larger, and the expectations are even higher. I've turned a $500 ticket into a $5k ticket. This is done simply by asking the customer what they expect from their build, and trying to understand what they're really hoping to accomplish. I was able to show him not only that he needed to spend more to get the reliability and power he desired, but that I was the guy who could make his goals a reality. I love the saying "cheap, fast, reliable: you can only have two." It rings true every single time.

For a little over a year, I've been working as both a technician and service representative at a small repair shop. It is there that I gained the most experience with the inner workings of what it takes to run a repair shop successfully. It was interesting to greet a customer, inspect their vehicle, sell the work, order the parts, install them, and bill them out at the end of the day. I don't know of too many shops that would ask that of their techs or service writers, but I enjoyed the experience. I also opened up the shop in the morning, and at least helped with closing up in the evening.

I like to take my time with my customers in order to ensure they understand what their money is going towards, and that it really is essential or at least beneficial to the longevity of their vehicle. I've worked with service writers who were condescending and impatient with customers. Although they may manage to sell the job, the customer is unlikely to return, or worse, likely to tell others of how they got bullied.

The owner approached me to tell me he would be taking over the location where he had been working for the past few years, and said he needed help. He was my friend whom I had met at automotive school, and we were always working on projects together. We were both intelligent and capable, as well as being able to work well together. So, when he told me about his new, big step forward, I knew it was the right decision. We picked up right where we left off, and with the help of our awesome receptionist, Everest Auto Repair took off, and never looked back. I learned a great deal by being immersed completely in the shop operations, and this experience is going to make my transition to a service writer position smooth and painless.

I opened the shop every morning (unless travis managed to arrive even earlier than I) and helped close up at night.

Back in May, I once again herniated the same disc (on my own), and luckily I've avoided surgery this time, and have just recently fully recovered with physical therapy and exercising on my own... I have decided that I can no longer wear myself out fixing cars, and I need to limit myself to the office. Travis would love to hire me, but his 4 bay shop does not produce enough volume to require a full time service writer.

Working at this performance shop was an excellent experience for me. I learned a great deal about the aftermarket performance world, including setting up dealer/wholesale accounts, putting together estimates for customers, selling work, assembling race engines, assembling twin turbo kits, custom fabrication, organizing and running track days for our customers, traveling to Los Vegas for SEMA, and the list goes on! Towards the end of my time there, the owner and I began having disagreements about how the shop was progressing, and When given the opportunity to help a friend start his repair business, I bowed out gracefully, and took it. The owner of JTune and I are still on good terms, but we just won't be going into business together any time soon.

I enjoyed my time learning my craft at Brandywine. It was here that I performed my first full motor swap.

Unfortunately, I injured myself with a herniated disc (while working on my car at home) and had no choice but to leave and recover. The process included surgery and months of down time.

Del Tech was wonderful for me. I was able to test out of the math courses, and the English course, and reduced my time there by a semester. I appreciated that we learned more than just automotive applications (hence why I earned an associates degree, rather than a diploma). I found the technical writing course and macroeconomics quite useful.

Travis and I were always assigned the toughest tasks..such as cars which hadn't run for 4 years, and have had all kinds of students hacking away at them...we had to chase countless electrical issues, bad gas, faulty sensors, etc. for pretty much our entire time there. We were also given the chance to work on our own cars, and I learned a lot working on my own car..motivated by the need to get home at the end of the day!
