I attended Doug’s yoga classes for over 3 years. I have studied with a lot of teachers all over the world, and found Doug’s classes to be the most physically challenging I have ever attended; however, he taught a mixed level class and he demonstrated variations and provided options which miraculously made the poses accessible to and appropriate for every student. His classes were often large yet he managed to give each person his attention, especially to help them avoid injury or find greater depth in a pose. Doug gives clear instruction anyone who’s ever twisted their neck in an awkward position in an effort to see what the heck the teacher is trying to describe, can relate to how important clarity is! His attention to alignment ensures his students know where they should be feeling the stretch and which specific muscles should be engaged, and also keeps yoga safe. His focus on guiding students to greater awareness of their own body is very effective, and he used his incredible knowledge of anatomy to help teach us about how our bodies were benefiting from what we were doing: stimulating the thyroid gland, or kidneys, building core strength, lengthening our spines to counteract the effect of gravity and aging, building the small muscles that support joints to prevent injury, or assisting our digestive system. I appreciated this quality in particular, because when you learn to connect your movement and physical sensations with such knowledge, the poses become remedies, or tools, that you can use anytime. Another thing I really appreciated about Doug was how his class was always new and different. He was so inspired and always learning new poses himself, which showed me that you can study yoga for 50 years and there will always be more to learn. This kept his class fresh and interesting and exposed us to many different yoga traditions – kundalini, Iyengar, ashtanga – and he even incorporated pilates and physical therapy practices! Many teachers develop an annoying habit of saying the same exact words every time, but Doug took care to avoid this repetition; by describing things in many different ways he helped make sure that the idea would “click” with every student. Until I found Doug, I practiced sporadically and only with the intention of gaining physical strength and flexibilityI. Doug helped me to realize that yoga also has so much wisdom to offer. He taught a variety of meditation techniques and introduced yoga philosophy in simple, tangible, and inspiring lessons. He sprinkled these tantalizing tidbits of new perspectives throughout the practice and gave just the right amount of gentle encouragement to explore the boundaries of our comfort zones and achieve greater balance and harmony. He encouraged us to challenge ourselves mentally and physically, to grow in our knowledge of our bodies and our world, and to find peace and stillness in our minds. February 27, 2012

Doug has been a yoga teacher of mine for quite some time now. He has an amazing ability to guide a class while remaining aware of everyone in the room and catering to the needs of those less advanced in the postures while incorporating opportunities to move further into challenges. His guidance is sought out by many and his wisdom is spectacularly insightful. I would definitely recommend him to anyone interested in yoga training or the wisdom of his attuned mastery! Not only is he at what I would consider the highest level achievable (he would say he is still learning) but his mastery of yoga, nutritional knowledge, and other life skills creates for his clients an energetic synergy that is empowering to the core. I would recommend Douglas with great enthusiasm to anyone seeking his skills. February 3, 2012

I had a serious hip injury after a car accident and I met Douglas as part of my physical therapy. Not only did he play an integral role in my healing – but he spoiled me for the rest of my life, because there is no better massage therapist in the world! It’s more than massage – you have to try it to believe it…It is other worldly! Douglas also introduced me to Bikram Yoga, the wonders of Thailand and opened up a whole new and interesting world for me. He is caring, smart, talented, dependable and an enlightened healer.
