A Naval Facility which overhauls Navy Aircraft Carriers, Surface Ships and
Submarines.
Major Duties:
1 - Prepared technical work documents detailing disassembly, repair,
inspection and reassembly of main propulsion components on Naval Ships.Main
propulsion components include main shafting, main shafting journal and
waterborne bearings, main turbine components, ship's service turbine
generators, reduction gears, piping, condensers and pumps.Technical work
documents were prepared using WordPerfect, Word and FrameMaker software.
2 - Served as on-site field engineer to resolve problems for removed ship
equipment being overhauled in a machine shop, or to resolve problems
shipboard.
Special Projects:
1 - Served as on-site field engineer for main propulsion equipment during
overhaul of USS KITTY HAWK (CV63) in 1998.This overhaul was the first ship
overhaul where main propulsion waterborne shafting was refurbished with the
shafts remaining installed.Shafting is normally removed and sent to a
machine shop for refurbishment.This in-place shafting refurbishment resulted
in considerable cost savings to the Navy, but created numerous problems and
resistance from production personnel, which were successfully negotiated.The
overhaul was considered a success.
2 - Served 3 months at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine as on-site
field engineer.Duties included resolving miscellaneous problems with valves,
and other shipboard components on SSN688 (Los Angeles) Class Nuclear
Submarines undergoing overhaul there.
