I have extensive knowledge in software development, mainly focused on Android apps and Internet-related technologies, especially web applications.

Android is the latest ecosystem I am passionate about. Have been developing Android apps since 2008, well before any Android device was available for testing, and I participated in both Android Developer Challenges. Even though I was quite familiar with OOP from my C++ experience, I learned Java and Eclipse because of Android. My main Android app - - was launched on the Android Market at the end of 2009, and continuously improved ever since. Essentially, it is a dashcam app, capturing road events on video. It was the first app of its kind on any smartphone platform, and it is still the most popular one. It was downloaded over 500,000 times, and is currently installed on almost 220,000 Android devices. During my Android experience, I've worked with: library projects, camera interface (and numerous device-specific particularities), GPS interface, background threads, content providers, services, preferences, encryption algorithms, in-app payments (through Paypal and the Market client), backward compatibility, localization, screen sizes/densities, declarative and programmatic UI, animations, image manipulation, accessibility, intent filters, broadcast receivers, file storage and uploads/downloads, server synchronization, contacts and many other small or larger sections from the Android SDK. I have also managed my apps on multiple app stores

PHP is the main language, which - in the past 12 years - I have become proficient in. Gained expertise in various open-source PHP scripts (content management, groupware, bulletin boards etc.), frameworks (CakePHP, Zend Framework) and classes (MVC, template engines, database abstraction, graphics generation, email processing etc.). Customized and/or incorporated with my OOP code, the developed scripts were turned into fully featured web applications, according to the clients' needs. Extensive commenting is also an essential part of my modus operandi.

In order to deliver competitive web sites, I fully utilized other technologies and languages, commonly used for web development: HTML, DHTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, JSON, AJAX (ExtJS, YUI, Prototype, jQuery, Javeline), RESTful and RPC services, SQL and C/C++. I have been continuously developing web sites since 1998, being able to also deal with special requirements, like interfacing with SMS/MMS gateways, payment processing systems (e.g. 2CheckOut, Amazon, GlobalCollect, Paypal, PaySystems, WorldPay), VoiceXML, Google Maps and dynamic PDF generation.

Databases play a key role in most of the web sites I develop, allowing me to further improve the acquired skills in designing, maintaining and optimizing SQL databases (MySQL, SQLite and PostgreSQL).

Although I specialize in back-end programming, on some occasions my front-end design skills were also used to achieve industry-standard web usability experience, by combining fast loading HTML code with JavaScript, and graphic design (e.g. color balance and image size reduction).

Having my own web server and domains, I couldn't resist the challenge to administer the whole server, by installing, configuring and monitoring various Linux distributions, Apache, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, CVS, SVN, and a whole range of utilities, needed to run an Internet server for several years. But lately, I mostly use web-based administration interfaces (e.g. Cpanel, Webmin and Plesk). Since 2009 I keep my web sites in the cloud, namely on Amazon EC2 instances, also relying on S3 for storage.

Communication skills

Basically, there are 3 types of communication areas, where I had to excel, in order to keep the competitive advantage of my company, continuously informing clients and team members.

App users - with over half a million downloads for my Android app, I have to stay on top of the incoming flow of questions, suggestions and problem reports. I answer them in emails, on my site, forums and even using Google Translate to reply in foreign languages.

Internet clients - having web development clients from various parts of the world (Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Switzerland, UK, Hong Kong and USA), a constant on-line dialog was essential in keeping everybody informed of development progress, and discuss important matters. Although we also used instant messaging, voice chat and telephone, e-mail is still the most widely used method of communication, and I respected the clients enough to reply within the same (or next) day.

Team members - some international web projects I was involved in, were developed by virtual teams, with my role ranging from PHP programmer or Android developer to project manager and team leader, coordinating UI designers and programmers. In all situations, I was regarded as a reliable team member.

Professional experience

Jan 2012 Hewlett Packard R&D (European Software Centre) - Galway, Ireland

In a short one-week crash course, I trained a team of 7 HP developers how to create Android apps. The training started with application fundamentals, and ended with how to publish on the Market, covering various aspects from the Android ecosystem. We went through various tutorials, so the developers can continue learning and developing on their own.

Orange Labs in the UK is based in London and Bristol in one of the most competitive and challenging telecoms market. Its main mission is to create innovative products and services by building relationships with world leading universities and major industry players in the UK.

MIG is a global integrated mobile and digital communications business, specializing in: mobile technology and services provision; mobile billing, messaging and mCommerce; mobile advertising and marketing; multi channel digital solutions; the design and build of mobile sites and applications, and user experience design.

Responsibilities

In my first on-site contract in the UK, I was in charge of refactoring the code base and adding in the final features into an Android app. Final client: Telefonica UK (O2 mobile operator)

1996 - Sep 2011 InfoLib Serv SRL - Brasov, Romania

Activating in the global marketplace of web development, for clients on 3 continents, InfoLib also offers various IT services to the local market in Brasov, Romania. Since 2008 I mostly focus on Android development.

Responsibilities

Owner and manager of this dynamic IT company, I was at the beginning in charge of everything related to customers and projects, like negotiating contracts, managing projects, building and monitoring teams, and actually taking part in software development. As my company has grown, some of the specific responsibilities were handled over to my qualified employees, but I organized and supervised their activities, and generally made sure everything was done according to my vision.

Achievements, my free Android app is in the top 1% of all Android apps, based on the download count (source: andbot.com). Its user rating never dropped below 4 (out of 5), having an average of 4.3.

Besides the sites InfoLib developed, and above all the technical challenges we overcome, I believe the main achievement was the team of capable IT professionals I managed to build. Depending on project specifics, I was able to choose the right people from my established pool of skilled designers and programmers.

Every site InfoLib developed, had specific requirements, target user base and developer(s) who made all happen, but here are listed only the sites where I had a sizable contribution:

Most of the projects above involved using PHP extensively, with MySQL as the database server, and JavaScript for front-end interactivity. Quite a few of the sites I worked on, are no longer online.

Every project I managed was completed on time, where the specifications were well defined. Otherwise we used agile methodologies to do iterative and incremental development, involving the projects' sponsors - sometimes more than they initially planned for.

Received the "Golden Planet 1998" award from the Internet Planet magazine, awarded to my very first database-driven website (InfoLib marketplace - a classifieds system with automatic e-mail ad feeds).

1998 - 2001 Romarta SA (part of United Capital - ) - Brasov, Romania

Romarta is a national holding, offering for rent office spaces in all major cities in Romania. I was employed as CTO at the local office in Brasov. My department was in charge of implementing and maintaining our LAN, with Linux and Windows NT servers, and several Win98 PCs. I was also the DBA for Informix, the database server from where Romarta's critical data was accessed through client-server technology.

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, SGS is the global leader in the inspection, verification, testing and certification industry. Employed as an inspector, I have also maintained the IT equipment at our local office.
