Resume for Sonja Jernstrom

Ms. Jernstrom is an Associate Scientist at Waterstone Environmental in Anaheim, California. Her primary responsibilities are conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Scoping Documents, and Preliminary Environmental Assessments. Ms. Jernstrom has designed, managed and performed Phase II soil investigations, groundwater sampling, and walk-through building inspections for properties throughout Southern California. Ms. Jernstrom, under the guidance of her Project Mangers, has worked closely with local agencies, including the Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Department of Toxic Substances Control, to achieve approval for soil and groundwater work and, ultimately, case closure for a variety of sites. Ms. Jernstrom has worked extensively on projects for local school districts and is familiar with the specialized procedures and reports required by district clients. Ms. Jernstrom began her career by participating in a number of internships in the environmental field, including assignments as a field scientist with the Bureau of Land Management and the Public Works Department of the City of Salem, Oregon. These experiences have provided her with experience in sampling and collection protocol, environmental land use acquisition and management, and governmental agency regulations and procedures.

Key Projects and Experience

Local School District WorkMs. Jernstrom has conducted numerous Phase I Environmental Assessments that meet the stringent requirements of local school districts.

Ms. Jernstrom has written and participated in several Scoping Documents for school sites throughout the City of Los Angeles, and has assisted in field work for several Preliminary Environmental Assessments.

Environmental Site AssessmentsMs. Jernstrom has completed numerous Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) on industrial, commercial, residential, and undeveloped properties in California and Arizona. These ESAs were conducted on behalf of major Southern California developers, large commercial banks, and wireless communications providers. Each of these projects required arranging site visits with representatives of the property, visual assessment of the property, researching potential environmental concerns at the property and its neighbors at local agencies by requesting information and conducting file reviews, performing interviews with site contacts, and completing a report that summarized the potential for environmental impact to the property.

Ms. Jernstrom is proficient in Parcel Platform, the online assessment service provider used by several national corporations for Phase I ESAs. This system is compliant with the updated AAI and ASTM standards.

Fieldwork Capabilities and SupervisionMs. Jernstrom has supervised and participated in a variety of field work activities, including several Phase II Environmental Site Assessments involving soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling activities. She has conducted work in oil fields and on industrial, commercial and undeveloped parcels throughout Southern California. Work has included the identification of abandoned oil wells, underground storage tanks (USTs), clarifiers, and historical agricultural sites. She has supervised work that included soil sampling for volatile organic compounds, metals, total petroleum hydrocarbons, and PCBs using hollow stem augurs and direct push Geoprobe rigs. She has also supervised air vacuum work to remove soil from sensitive areas.

Ms. Jernstrom has conducted groundwater sampling under the close supervision of the Regional Water Board. She has conducted extensive field supervision projects in oil fields and is aware of the additional precautions required in such environments. During each sampling activity, she was responsible for monitoring health and safety for herself and subcontractors, classifying and logging soil and groundwater samples, and making decisions with the assistance of the on-site field supervisor for additional sampling at each field location.

Ms. Jernstrom has also supervised asbestos, hydrocarbon, and PCB-removal from a variety of sites throughout the area.

Litigation SupportMs. Jernstrom has worked on expert witness testimony presentations for litigation support projects in Southern California. These activities included compilation of data, hazardous materials research, and preparation of final testimony and courtroom presentations.

Health and Safety Ms. Jernstrom has prepared several Health and Safety Plans for various Phase II soil and groundwater investigations.

Asbestos Testing and Air MonitoringMs. Jernstrom is certified as a California Site Surveillance Technician and has performed bulk asbestos sampling and air monitoring on properties throughout California.
