August 2007 to Present: Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Michael W. West &

Associates, Inc. Responsible for geotechnical engineering studies and designs in

support of transportation, land development, oil and gas, mining, and water

resource projects in steep mountainous terrain; provides specialized technical

services in retaining wall design and stability evaluation, slope stability, geologic

hazard mitigation, ground support and improvement, foundation engineering,

forensic geological and geotechnical engineering, and dam safety evaluations.

Representative ongoing projects include:

Telluride Airport, Colorado Consultation to project team in regard to

embankment stability, settlement, dewatering, and ground improvement for

high (>200 ) embankment improvements at a site with a history of

geotechnical stability issues.

Starkey Gulch Landslide, Parachute, Colorado Consultation to pipeline

company and oversight of ground improvement contractors for slope

stabilization along gas pipeline right of way in landslide terrain.

Montage Hotel, Park City, Utah Consultation to project team in regard to

stability, submittals review, and construction services for 70 foot deep

permanent basement shoring wall in mine waste rock, utilizing composite

construction with soldier beams, tieback anchors, and MSE techniques.

Angler Mountain Ranch, Silverthorne, Colorado Consultation to

developer and project team for construction of subdivision including access

roads, utilities, and retaining walls in steep landslide terrain.

RidgeGate Subdivision, Lone Tree, Colorado Review of geologic hazard

mitigation strategies, slope stability, and retaining wall global stability

issues for a subdivision with high (>30 ) retaining walls in landslide terrain.

Confidential Client Forensic review of ground conditions and ground

support design related to excavation failure and collapse of an historic

July 1996 to August 2007: Senior Engineer to Principal, Golder Associates

Inc., Lakewood, CO. Formed and lead mountainous terrain geotechnical group.

Responsible for project management, development of geologic hazard mitigation

strategies, design of retaining walls and ground support/improvement measures,

foundation engineering, dam site characterization, and related geotechnical practice

areas. Representative projects include:

DeBeque Canyon Landslide, CDOT, DeBeque Colorado - Project

Manager for emergency response planning, characterization, probabilistic

slope stability model, analysis and design of mitigation alternatives, and

development of a decision model to support selection of the preferred

mitigation alternative for this large and complex landslide that threatens I-

FHWA/CFLHD MSE Shoring Studies - Project manager and Principal

Investigator for contract with FHWA to develop procedures and manual for

design of MSE walls constructed in front of shored cuts.

E-470, Segment IV - Project manager for a $250,000 geotechnical services

contract with the E-470 Public Highway Authority for segment IV of the E-

470 Beltway around metro Denver. Scope involved a comprehensive

geotechnical exploration and testing program, and addresses such issues as

innovative bridge foundations, MSE retaining walls, interchanges and

overpass foundations, pavements, slope and embankment stability,

settlements, and scour assessment.

Utah DOT Geotechnical Services - Principal in charge of assorted

geotechnical design services provided to UDOT under consultant pool

agreement. Experience has included technical lead on characterization,

alternatives analysis, and design of retaining walls and engineered rock fills

for US 6 in Price Canyon. Other projects have included characterization of

high rock cuts in weathered shale, and rockfall analysis and mitigation

design near Spanish Fork, Utah.

New Mexico SHTD Geotechnical Services - Project Manager for 2

separate on-call geotechnical services contracts under for NMSHTD.

Services provided have included soil nail design review and field CQA, and

MSE wall global stability analyses and design review for US 285; rock cut

design, development of blasting specifications, and RSS fill design for NM

48; rock cut design review for US 70; soil nail review and CQA for NM 76,

and remedial investigation of embankment performance and pavement

heaves on US 550.

Sand Creek Parkway Aurora, Colorado - Geotechnical services manager

for design of this urban arterial parkway across the Fitzsimmons Army

Medical Center site, for compliance with a record of decision (ROD) related

to 4 landfills that the alignment crosses.

Bet Netufa Canal, Nazereth, Israel Consultant to Ecolog Engineering,

Ltd. of Tel Aviv and Mekorot (the Israeli National Water Authority) for

rehabilitation of the concrete lining of a 40 year old canal in the Netufa

Valley, subject to swelling clay behavior.

April 1988 to July 1996: Regional Engineer, Tensar Earth Technologies, Inc.,

Denver, Colorado. Responsible for technical support of transportation, civil,

mining, and solid waste applications of Tensar products and technologies in the

Rocky Mountain States. Involved with key account development, project

development and management, technical service, and field service. Specialty areas

of practice include slope and retaining wall stability, landslide and soft soil

mitigation, and pavement systems. Project experience includes a wide variety of

DOT/transportation projects, major property development, mine construction, and

landfills.

Inc.,

Denver, Colorado. Responsible for initiation, management, and conduct of

various geotechnical studies and investigations. Also responsible for training and

direction of staff engineers and technicians. Areas of practice include foundation

systems, dams, slope stability, site improvement techniques, and pavement

thickness design. Project experience includes dams and reservoirs, commercial and

residential buildings, highway construction, and mine facilities.

1984 to 1986: Geotechnical Engineer, Law Engineering, Charleston, SC and

Charlotte, NC. Responsible for initiation and conduct of various geotechnical

studies and investigations, as well as client development. Also served as Drilling

Department Manager. Areas of practice included foundation systems, dam stability

and seepage, seismic considerations including liquefaction prediction and seismic

risk assessment, groundwater studies, site improvement techniques, construction

over soft soils, and pavement thickness design. Project experience includes nuclear

power plant facilities, earth dams, marine and waterfront structures, bridges,

intermodal facilities, and commercial buildings.
