Dear Recruiter:
RE: Software Engineer Position
Please consider this as an employment inquiry for a Software
Engineer position through or with your "HEADHUNTER.NET"
Participating Company.
I am looking for either regular full time or contract employee
placement in the Research Triangle Park, NC area and am available
to start work now. Although I am interested in long term regular
full time or longer than 6 months contract/consultant placement I
am willing to help "de-risk" the situation for a potential
employer by "initially going 1099" or "Corp. to Corp.".
From my perspective the ideal job would have an
* Initial assignment on legacy software in an embedded
system or application using assembler languages /
Procedural Compilers / Structured Compilers.
--- with a follow-on of a ---
* Future opportunity to work with more current methodologies,
(Object Oriented methods and languages (C++ & Java), C, or
Visual Basic).
That possible future migration to more current work projects
would give me the chance not only to contribute during my initial
employment but also to evolve into a contributor using my recent
training. I consider this to be important so I can continue to
develop and maintain more current skills.
Regarding compensation, primarily salary / hourly rate and
benefits. Am very flexible and consider as a reasonable approach;
* Determine the budgeted compensation range a prospective
employer has in mind for the position, (not driven by my salary
history but recognizing need to be competitive)
* How well my skills match the position requirements
* How well I am perceived to fit the corporate culture
* And, for a contract, the margin that would be applied
I look forward to discuss value I can add to your organization.

reduce the PROM replacements required to fix field problems to
just PROMS for the New Versions!
Worked with our developers to evolve this "manual operator panel
method" to a process whereby we could dial-in, software verify
Current Fix Level, and automatically apply available required
additional fixes.
+ On a different product, while I was a Product Planner providing
Technical Marketing Support I architected, designed, developed,
and provided code changes through a method where our Disk
Resident Code could be Patched OR Restored by non-technical

following verbatim instructions. This process allowed us to
satisfy Customer requirements for changes or new function when
the functionality would not otherwise be available. Improved
Customer Satisfaction when they were threatening to return/reduce
roll out of our product unless required function was
provided.
===

discussing the value I might add to your organization.
Sincerely,

An overview of
training and some specific assignments: education/training
highlighted as shown here.
BEFORE JOINING IBM
:
BS
in Electrical Engineering - Honors Program Polytechnic
Institute of Brooklyn
WHILE AT IBM:
Graduate Course Work in E
lectrical Engineering N C State
University,
Raleigh, NC
MBA - Evening MBA Program at Fuqua School of Business,
Duke University, Durham, NC
After being a developer and designer for Protocol Converter
products and Main Frame Terminal Controllers (while at IBM) I
then worked as a System Technical Requirements Product Planner
for those products and then for a Bridge / Router product.
Resident Graduate Technical Professional Studies - IBM Systems
Research Institute, Hawthorn, NY
For the Router product I focused primarily on Network Management
(NM) issues internal and external to the product.
* Was able to get our project to use SNMP and Great NM Platform
& Applications versus internally championed "IBM Proprietary
NM" protocols.
* Got control of the application development strategy within the
Router organization and focused developers on the Router
functions versus "the neat fun applications they wanted to create
and market".
* I managed getting our Bridge functions and NM in alignment with
our current and evolving IBM Token Ring Bridge products.
AFTER LEAVING IBM
: (11/12)
I undertook to upgrade and update my technical skills
with training at Wake Technical Community College. I decided to
take course work in the following;
Object Oriented Analysis and Design
Java
C
C++ (completed the others while in transition; the C++ I
continued on weekends & evenings after joining Nortel)
WHILE AT NORTEL:
The Programming Language on the product I was working on was a
Nortel Proprietary Pascal. The opportunity to use the newer
languages was to have come on the "next project". My only real
world use of C++ was when I volunteered to fix a problem. My goal
was not only to develop the correction but as well to become
familiar with the compiler, load build, and unit test procedures
to be used for the "next project".
This "next project" was a very significant undertaking for
Nortel. Nortel had committed itself to develop a suite of edge
and network products to provide Voice Network Reliability and
Availability for Data Networks.
Nortel committed a huge investment in time and money to make
training available for its people so we would be better prepared
for this undertaking. It really was and still is a Big Deal but
being done at other locations!
While at Nortel I also took a number of
introductory & survey training programs in "IP" and "Data".
Some of this was refresher training. This intensive training was
in
preparation for the "next project".
Introduction to Data Communications
Introduction to Frame Relay
Internet Architecture
Introduction to ATM
ATM Broadband Signaling
The OSI & Layered Protocols
Data Link Protocols
Voice and Video Features of the Internet
Internetworking & Route Discovery
ClearCase Fundamentals, Administration, & Meta Data
As we were staffing up for the "next project", (and (12/12)
since I had an interest in understanding overall system
function, interactions, and packaging), I was tasked with being
our initial interface to the ClearCase administration group and
also to set up procedures for handling "3rd Party Proprietary
Software".
We had a legal requirement to limit all forms of access to just
specific enumerated individuals and to exclude all others from
any kind of READ or MODIFY access. This exclusion was required
both for the UNIX environment and also when using the ClearCase
library system.
The exclusion was designed to exclude all but one UNIX
Administrator and all oth
er ClearCase Users. I used UNIX Chron
Jobs to monitor for changes to access list and group memberships.
THEN . . .
Nortel merged with Bay Networks; the "old Nortel" was taxed with
an across the board 10% Restructuring Layoff in September 1998.
This was 7,000 - 9,000 employees corporate wide, 700-900 at RTP.
I was included in those numbers.
THE NET . . .
The net is that I have extensive software development experience
utilizing my skills with Assemblers and Compilers (Procedural/
Structured/Very Strongly Typed Structured) but I have not yet
used my more recent skills with the C and Object Oriented (Java &
C++) "on the job" in a real world environment.
AFTER LEAVING NORTEL:
Currently I am taking
Visual Basic Programming at Wake Technical Community College.
My plan is to continue with the advanced class and then consider
going for the Microsoft Visual Basic Certification, especially if
it adds value to my employer. I am also trying to get up to speed
on XML on my own and through professional technical society
presentations.
