Background
Formal music training started for me at the age of six and my first public appearance as a musicians happened a year later. Shortly after starting with the piano, I picked up the violin and immediately developed a great love of the string family. My studies as composer started at age thirteen when I left school to enroll privately at the local conservatory.
As a violinist I have studied under Esme Koornhof & Piet Koornhof of the Potchefstroom Konservatorium, Anette Wehnert of the Kolner Konservatorium, and Antoinette Lohman of the Utrecht Conservatorium.
As a composer, I spent my years as an apprentice with Hannes Taljaard. I did however also receive tuition and attend masterclasses with South African composer Martin Watt, American composer / pianist Evan Mack, and London-based composer Robert Fokkens.
During these formative years I developed years of experience performing with chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras * I played my first paying gig when I was fourteen. One of the highlights for me has to be the opportunity I had to perform with the international baroque ensemble Fons Partita, recording Handel Chandos Anthems, the first historically informed performance of these works in South Africa. In 2006 I became principle 2nd violinist of the North West Youth Orchestra. In 2007 I became co-concertmaster, and in 2008 I served as its concertmaster, performing very successful concerts in the UK, Holland, Germany and France. In 2009 I took the seat of concertmaster for the newly formed PUK Symphony Orchestra and led it in its very first concert season.
Work experience
I have been working as a contract composer since 2008. Listed below are some highlights for me from the past few years.
Current : Contract composer for Pajamahouse Studios * I started work with this New York / Tokyo based developer early 2011. Wonderful bunch of people to work with!
2011 : Contract composer for Elspeth*s Garden - I was commissioned to compose the main themes that will represent this game world. During the process I also had the opportunity to work with a wonderful violinist to record the violin solos for the score. All the contracting of talent and recording studio resources was handled by me.
2010 : Contract composer for Tasty Poison Games * In 2010 Tasty Poison developed an absolutely charming game for the iPhone (later ported to the iPad) in which you have to raise a pet dragon. It was a joy working in the context of the magical atmosphere they have created. This led to a contract with indie developer Free Lives which unfortunately never came to fruition.
2009 * 2010 : Composer for Angsty Studios * Angsty studios may not be big, but they have delivered some fantastic music to enterprising machinima directors. I worked on a few scores while I was part of the team and I learned a lot about timing.
2009 : Orchestrator for PUK Symphony Orchestra * At the beginning of 2009 I was approached by the conductor of this orchestra and he proposed that I work as an orchestrator for the orchestra. I spent the rest of the year orchestrating many works for concerts and events. It really is a good feeling to work with a live orchestra.
Tools I use every day
These tools are absolutely essential to the work I do every day and I am very comfortable to achieve almost anything with them. This is not to say that I am not familiar with other tools, in fact I have used and can find my way well around most software and hardware packages, but these are some of my personal favourites.
My home studio is equipped with:
Windows PC with lots of brains
Sibelius Notation software for preparing scores
Reaper DAW with a long list of plugins for recording and polishing up audio
Many different Virtual Instruments including LA Scoring Strings, CineSamples Hollywoodwinds, CineSamples Brass Core & Brass Pro, Omnisphere, etc
Wwise for adaptive / interactive score implementation
Oxygen49 midi keyboard for *rapid-idea-deployment*
Pair of Yamaha MSP5 monitors
When live recordings are required, I personally contract the musicians needed and acquire the appropriate recording studio for the task * you can just sit back and enjoy the music happening!
