Design and Control of a Partial UAV Simulator in a Water Tunnel: May-July 2012
Project Mentor: Dr. Chris Manzie, Mechanical Engineering, Melbourne School of Engineering, The University of Melbourne.
Developed a hardware-in-the-loop system modelling an underwater vehicle, with the real m odel being a fin mounted in a water
tunnel. The main objective was to sense the hydrodynamic forces acting on the fin and feed this back to the HiL system to
simulate the closed loop performance. A low-order model of the missile flight control system was implemented, thus forcing the
model to achieve the steering commands developed by the guidance system.
The steering of the model was achieved with the help of an actuator which accurately changed the angle of attack based on the
feedback received from the sensor. The expected aerodynamic loads were calculated for a variety of bodies mounted in the
water tunnel. Then, a detailed analysis was performed in order to select the appropriate sensor and actuator to be used, thus
maintaining the best trade-off between performance and cost.
A force plate, working on the principle of Hall effect, was chosen as the sensor. The actuator chosen was an integrated stepper
motor with an inbuilt encoder. Using these components, a design of the entire system was developed in SolidWorks.
A virtual model of the system was developed in Simulink in order to describe the basic functioning of its individual parts. A
closed loop control scheme was implemented on this virtual low-order model in order to successfully simulate the closed loop
performance of the actual missile flight control system.

Spherical Orienting Device Using Omni Wheels - Ball Balancing Robot: B.Tech Project: Aug 2012-Present
Project Mentor: Dr. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Dr. Amitabha Mukerjee, Department of
Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
Building a ball balancing robot using an Inertial Measurement Unit and Omni Wheels. This robot will be able to balance itself and
avoid obstacles while moving on a sphere.
The design of the robot has been made in SolidWorks. The system is being modelled in Simulink for virtually implementing the closed
loop control scheme.
This robot encompasses an important area of research as it involves assembly and kinematics of omni wheels, which is very
useful for motion that involves movement in any direction with minimum amount of effort.
Self-Balancing Bicycle Robot: May-July 2011
Project Mentor: Dr. Bishakh Bhattacharya, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
Made a self-balancing bicycle robot, which could balance itself autonomously by taking inputs from a 5 degree of freedom
Inertial Measurement Unit (3-axis accelerometer and a 2-axis gyro-sensor).
A SolidWorks model was first created before making the mechanical model of suitable dimensions.
The inputs were filtered through Kalman Filtering and the angle of inclination was measured.
A Reaction Wheel Pendulum mechanism was used for balancing the robot, and the speed of the flywheel was controlled by the
PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) algorithm.
Boeing IIT-K Autonomous Navigation System (Abhyast) Phase III: Nov 2011-Present
Project Mentor: Dr. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
Building an autonomous navigation vehicle which can reach any defined coordinate while detecting and avoiding obstacles
incorporating a GPS module, 3D laser-scanner, magnetometer and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), using a PandaBoard.

Summer Project done under the Robotics Club of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
Made a robot which was capable of multi-coloured line-following, measuring the lengths of th e different coloured lines to
generate a colour code in order to find a way out of the maze.
An Atmega 32 MCU took inputs from the Infra-Red sensors and Pulse-Width Modulation was used to control the motors.
PID algorithm was used for smooth line-following and the code was written in C language.

The objective was to build the fastest line-following robot which could eliminate slower opponents while followin g a white line
on a black background.
Smooth and fast line-following was ensured by using the PID algorithm, and the constant values were fed to the robot by user -
microcontroller interaction through the LCD interface with the help of an external switchboard.
The EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) of the microcontroller was used to store these values
even when there was no power supply.

The attacker had a motorized flipper mechanism for striking the ball.
Used CC2500 based wireless modules for controlling the actions of the robot.
Champions in the event Wild Soccer in Techkriti 11 (Annual Technical Festival of IIT Kanpur).
Mobile Phone - Controlled Soccer Robot: Sept 2010
Project done under the Robotics Club of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
The goal-scoring robot was wirelessly controlled by a mobile phone, based on Dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling.
Used DTMF signaling for mobile-to-mobile wireless communication to control the robot's movements and its flipper which
scored goals. Thus the controller had to use his mobile phone to specify the robot's actions.
