WORK EXPERIENCE

Food and Drug Administration, Office of Orphan Product Drugs Silver Spring, MD

Summer Student (STEP)

June 2009 Present

As a program assistant with the Food and Drug administration, I was responsible for collecting, compiling, entering, tracking and retrieving orphan drug applications using an Oracle data base. I assisted staff reviewers with orphan drug application research. Also, I was charged with updating data bases and filing sensitive, proprietary digital information in accordance with established federal record management policies and procedures.

I spent the majority of my time at the FDA working on a paper reduction, scanning project. The goal of the project was to digitize paper records and enter them into a searchable Oracle database. I had to initially organize the paper records into specific categories that matched the digital archive. I was responsible for coordinating with and sending the paper records to an offsite contractor for scanning. The paper records were scanned onto a disc which I would later use to upload into the digital archive. Additionally, I performed quality control checks on the data for functional links along with ensuring digital files were labeled correctly. My most important control check was making sure names, dates, and addresses match the information on the physical files. I performed these checks to identify labeling mistakes, detect gaps in the digital archive and take corrective action. The database I maintained had to be accurate since other employees used it for retrieving historical data to support their research while reviewing orphan drug applications.

Further, during this time, my supervisor asked me to take on an additional administrative role of assisting with travel authorizations, and preparing travel vouchers and miscellaneous reimbursement claims in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) and Joint Travel Regulation (JTR) using the Federal Government travel manager system (GovTrip). The Govtrip application is a program used by the FDA to pay/refund employees for work related travel such as paid parking and toll road/bridge fees. Basically, I reviewed employees trip tickets making sure claims were allowable under the travel regulations, create the voucher and upload the receipts into the voucher according to category.

CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE

As a criminal justice major, I participated in Mount Saint Marys University (USMU) multinational (Canadian and American) Crime Scene Investigation Competition. Serving as team leader, I led my team to a 2nd place finish from among 14 teams. There were a number of competition administrators including city policemen, Maryland state troopers, and Frederick, MD Chief of Police Kim Dine. We were assigned an administrator who gave us a general situation briefing and some sense of what tasks we would be required to do. The staged scene involved an assault with a deadly weapon. Since we were given limited information, we went in cold and would have to think on our collective feet. My team members selected me to serve as team leader because I showed confidence and exhibited leadership to direct and guide the team properly. I immediately began analyzing the situation upon entering the crime scene. I assigned tasks to team members in order to avoid role confusion and provided reminders on what to focus on particularly when carrying out their specific tasks. After we collected and evaluated evidence from the crime scene, our administrator instructed us to draw a map of the crime scene, take witness statements, develop a hypothesis and write a final report. Upon completion, points were tallied and my team earned second place falling just a few points short of first place.
