Student Assistant (October 2010 Present)

Assisted Dr. Giri Narasimhan on a metagenomics project involving the analysis of the lung microbiome of

patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Developed a bioinformatics pipeline for

analysis of 16S rRNA sequences. Created and managed a local implementation of the Galaxy framework

on a high-performance computer cluster, including the incorporation of custom-built tools and

preparation of a software maintenance schedule. Developed a software tool to simulate evolution of

16S rRNA sequences. Created simulated bacterial communities as test cases for existing biodiversity

calculators and classification tools.

MATHEE LAB FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Assisted Dr. Kalai Mathee with basic microbiology laboratory techniques related to the metagenomics

project described above. Helped isolate microbial DNA in samples collected from human subjects.
