Pastimes

Things I like to do in my free time include web site development, surfing, sailing, scuba diving (not so much of those since I've lived in Korea), writing, travel, gaming, managing a busy web community I founded in 2007, and learning languages. includes personal sites and commercial web properties.

Passions

Web Design and Development

I love the internet, and I love making beautiful things and seeing people enjoy them. In another era, I might have been a carpenter or stonemason.

The Written Word

I've always been a voracious reader, and still manage to read a book or two per week, although these days my reading happens mostly on a tablet computer. I write less than I used to, but it is one of my most satisfying pastimes.

Web community

The internet has transformed human community, and one of the things that excites me most in life a life lived all over the world is how distance has become increasingly irrelevant, and I can make and maintain friendships with people I would never otherwise have met. We're still in the early years, and there's much that we're still learning about how best to make web community work, but I love it and have thought long and hard about it over the past decade and more.

Teaching and Sharing My Enthusiasms

Standing in front of a class or in front of a group of executives, it doesn't matter: one of my great joys in life is to speak to people and get them as excited as I am about the things that I love, things like learning, language and technology.
