Forestry Technician (This is a federal job)

Supervisor: Jim Thompson 231-***-****)

Okay to contact this Supervisor: Yes

The address listed above is for the SO, but I worked out of the Lacroix Ranger District in Cool, MN. Served under the District''s TMA, to assist the Timber Sale Boundary Crew. I used my skills in map and aerial Photographic Interpretation, to locate the timber sale cutting unit boundaries and to map them (using a Trimble@ GPS unit). I sat in on the District''s Timber Sale Meetings. Through this participation, I learned a great amount concerning the importance of a thorough scoping effort; i.e., knowledge of and anticipation of the potential pitfalls and problems. One must be aware of any regeneration that is present and which could possibly be left undamaged, as the selected over story is removed. Furthermore, one needs to ask, is even a suitable amount of merchantable and accessible timber volume to justify the sale in the first place

Also, one must be aware of the presence of RMZs (Riparian Management Zones), or potential RMZ''s, as these may present involve issues with the Shipstead-Newton-Nolan Legislation. One must be aware of the local BMPs (Best Management Practices), with regard to RMZ Buffer Zones, as well. All of this knowledge, plus a thorough timber cruise, must be implemented, before the EA (Environmental Analysis) and EIS (Environmental Impact Statement can be written. I have had insight into how the lack of a thorough and keen on-the-job observation, can waste much time and effort, whenever this critical advance work is either not performed or done at a subpar level. The person writing the EA should do an ''on-site'', beforehand; it is difficult to write about an area you have not seen. One must also be aware of the Local Listing of Species on EPA''s List of Threatened and Endangered Plant and Animals. On the La Croix R.D., for example, we had to protect the habitat for the Lynx and Timber wolf. We had to protect Human and Cultural Resources; i.e., Archaeological Artifacts (Historic Preservation Act), cemeteries, and whatever mitigation measures would be needed, if found. This scoping effort must be thoroughly demonstrated to the viewing public or one is just inviting an appeal. I learned that the courts take a hard look at this. We are all under scrutiny. I say, ''Do it right the first time! I also used my Skills in Aerial Photographic Interpretation to distinguish differences between vegetation features such as bare rock, bare soil, Mature Sawtimber, Pole timber, Seedling/sapling, or recent clear-cut. I located Property Lines on Color-Infrared Aerial Photography, using the District''s ''Compel'' maps (for the upcoming timber sales, as well. I used the District''s Two-Way Radio System to call-in my locations throughout the day. Contact Supervisor: Yes.
