Research expertise

Plant and cyanobacterial biochemistry, molecular biology, and metabolic engineering. Specific areas of interest are carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, source-sink interactions, photosynthesis, cereal biology, bioengineering of plants and cyanobacteria for biofuel synthesis and carbon sequestration. Lead PI for an ARPA-E project (FOLIUM) aiming at establishing tobacco as a platform for foliar production of advanced hydrocarbon biofuels (2012-) Lead PI for an LDRD (CyanoAlkanes) project with the objective of engineering cyanobacteria for production of high-density liquid biofuels (2010-2012) Lead PI for several European, Nordic, and Swedish research projects with focus on regulation of photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism in plants and cyanobacteria (1999-2009) Scientific output: 106 published articles in journals or books. Invited and participated in a large number of international and national conferences and meetings. 5 innovation disclosures. 10 Ph.D. students have graduated in my group since 1992.

Teaching experience I have a solid teaching expertise in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Photosynthesis, and Plant Gene Technology. I was Director of Undergraduate Studies in Biochemistry at Stockholm University 1992-1999. During the same time, I was the responsible and main lecturer in Biochemistry with around two 10-week courses per year, and also developed course material and on-line classes in Biochemistry. I was nominated for the Teacher of the Year award at Stockholm University 1997, 1996, and 1994. At SLU, Uppsala, I was the responsible and main lecturer in Cell Biology with one 10-week course per year, and Photosynthesis and Plant Gene Technology with around 8 classes per year. I was Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Department during 1999-2004.
