Coach Evaluation
Dear College Coach,
It is our pleasure to recommend Karley Allen for consideration for your college team. We have coached over 120 players in our 24 seasons as varsity coaches at New Kent High School. During that time, we have coached sixteen players who went on to play in college varsity programs at the DII and DIII levels. Karley Allen is the best all-around player we have coached in that time as her stats below will show.
Karley Allen was the New Kent stats leader for 2011 in attack kills (296), attack efficiency (.225), service kills (70), and passing (487). Karley is now #2 in career kills (664) for our program and is the first player at New Kent to exceed 500 career kills during her junior year. Karley needs only 39 kills next season to become the all-time New Kent career kill leader (and we have stats going back to 1991).
As a junior, she is already the career leader in attack attempts with 1840 for her 3 seasons on varsity. This is a reflection of both her effectiveness, which encourages setters to get her the ball, and her competitiveness, which leads her to always look for the scoring opportunity in every rally.
Karley is very intense and focused in competition and very aggressive in her ability to generate attacks. She is the type of competitor who can take the inevitable hitting error in stride and come right back and put the next ball away.
As a middle attacker, Karley can score hitting to her left or right, hard off the block, with a roll shot to the middle, or with a dink to a corner. Her ability to hit powerfully to the right of her approach line is unique in our experience as coaches. Karley is the player we want taking the swing on match point and she is the type of competitor who wants to be taking that swing.
Karley is equally effective on defense. she lead the team in blocks with 20 solo and 21 assisted blocks and was second in digs with 230 behind our Libero. As a defensive player, Karley has a well-developed ability to read what the attacker intends to do. What makes Karley unique among players we have coached is that she has the confidence to act on her instincts and make the early move to the point of defense. Combined with good quickness, this means she is often seen flying out of her middle back position to dig a dink or tip when closer players have not even responded to the ball.
Though 5'11 players are not normally known for their passing prowess, Karley also led the team this season with 487 service passes and a team-high 1.77 pass rating (on a 4.0 scale). Karley's passing was so important to our offense that we ran her as the middle "primary" passer in five of six passing rotations. It was not unusual for Karley, while playing the front row, to pass the serve from the middle service receive position then run a quick hit at the net.
Finally, Karley led the team this season in service kills with 70 and was second in service points with 186. Karley has a wicked flat as well as an extremely effective short serve.
Karley is our best on-court communicator and is clearly the team leader on and of the court. Although a junior, her leadership and volleyball skills were recognized by her teammates this year who elected her team captain.
Karely was also recognized by the coaches we competed against over the past two seasons. She was selected by the 2011 VA High School Showcase All-Tournament Team and was selected this season to the First Team for both the Bay Rivers District and Region I. In 2010, as a sophomore, Karley was selected to the Bay Rivers District First Team and Second Team All-Region.
If you are looking for an aggressive competitor with excellent all-around volleyball skills and the desire to continue playing at the next level, Karley Allen is worthy of consideration for your program.
