NETAPP Research Triangle Park, North Carolina

Performance Characterization Engineer and AnalystMay 2006Present

Built tools to visualize, quantify, and organize raw performance data in ways that help

identify performance

characteristics and bottlenecks in NetApp's data storage systems .

Developed a framework to visualize time -series data of performance metrics (CPU,

memory, disk/network I/O), and

IOPS metrics from SAN and NAS storage devices.

Assisted with the reproduction, analysis, and resolution of escalated customer

performance problems .

Responsible for characterization and measurement of the performance of various front -

end storage protocols and its

interaction with different types of filesystem benchmarks.

Cluster Quality-of-Service

o Responsible for leading the planning, monitoring, and execution of testing and analysis

for QoS feature.

o Designed, executed, and analyzed tests to understand QoS overhead, SLO/Policy

enforcement, performance

isolation, workload classification scalability, QoS performance metric verification, QoS

memory usage, QoS

tracing overhead, and to characterize the behavior and measure the performance overhead

of message processing

scheduler and disk scheduler.

o Provided QoS function-level analysis for various software releases using line-by-line

profiling.

o Built an automation framework to run tests to analyze QoS features for understanding

QoS overhead, SLO/policy

enforcement, counter verification, and performance isolation.

Amit Prakash Sawant 1 of 3 5/22/2012

o Tested QoS performance against different types of workloads, such as closed, open,

bursty, internal, and mixed

using various workload generators. Also developed parsing and analysis tools to evaluate

the results .

o Measured, analyzed, and characterized QoS workload scalability performance (upto 10,000

workloads), especially

the affect on WAFL performance when memory for 10,000 workloads is consumed by the kernel

.

o Analyzed QoS features for lock contentions and code paths that could be shorte ned to

yield improvements in

scalability performance by providing QoS function-level analysis using line-by-line

profiling of regressed

functions in affected code-paths.

o Responsible for meeting various code milestones merge requirements by running performa

nce overhead tests

(pathlength and throughput), functionality tests, sanity tests, coverity tests, and

feature integration tests .

Flash Cache

o Designed and developed testing and analysis strategy for flash cache (Performance

Acceleration Module) in a

time-critical situation that was instrumental for higher management to make executive

decision on whether to

pursue flash cache rewarming.

o Designed various test cases including simulation of takeover/giveback scenario for

cache rewarming.

o Crafted and executed proof of concept experiments for various existing and prospective

customers

relating to external cache and predicting its performance gain by reducing the number of

disk spindles.

o Characterized the performance of flash cache by measuring read and write performance

with external

cache, estimating the hit rate, estimating the CPU cost of read from external cache

compared to reads

from disks. Also, by understanding the behavior with flash cache for SFS2008 under

various data and

metadata caching policies, and analyzing SPC1 performance with flash cache.

4-core Pathlength Analysis

o Responsible for pathlength improvements across various benchmarks on 4-core platforms.

o Conducted RAID, NETWORK, and STORAGE domain pathlength analysis using flat-profiles,

full-profiles,

callgraphs, GProf, SKtrace, Dtrace, line-by-line profiling, and hardware profiling to

narrow down expensive code

paths. Also, used treemaps to visualize SKtrace data.

o Developed a 3-dimensional visualization tool called GraphRun that was published at CMG

2008 conference.

Also, filed a patent on this visualization tool (P01 -5426).

o Jumbo frame analysis for the NETWORK domain, using network monitoring tools.

Summer

Intern

Built a visualization tool that allowed engineers to visually analyze, explore, and

compare a storage controller s

performance and thereby identify bottlenecks.

Designed and implemented a programmatic mechanism for visualizing the software

architecture of NetApp s Data

ONTAP using Multi-Dimensional Scaling technique. This visual interface was used to study

different architectural

views by representing different attributes of Data ONTAP s software components.

QIMONDA Cary, North Carolina

Summer InternMay 2005August 2005

Designed graphical user interfaces for testing Integrated Circuits that provided

abstraction from the underlying

complex testing infrastructure.

Implemented a web-based utility that ran cron jobs and graphed performance data in real

-time.

Summer

InternMay 2004August 2004

Designed and developed a debug manager utility in C .

Designed, installed, and customized company s first web-based bug-reporting tool

(Bugzilla) to systematically keep

track of hardware and software problems discovered in Qimonda products.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY (NCSU) Raleigh, North Carolina

Research and Teaching AssistantJanuary 2002December 2007

Conducted research in visualization and computer graphics that resulted in various

conference papers, journal articles,

and patents.

Taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in visualization and computer graphics

.

CENTER FOR INNOVATION MANAGEMENT STUDIES, NCSU Raleigh, North Carolina

Assistant DirectorMay 2001December 2001

Created a website for the electronic l ibrary at the Center for Innovation Management

Studies .

Designed and implemented automation software for an archival backup system .
