Dear Sir or Madam,
I have been working in the Information and Information Technology field for several years
now and I have spent that time taking advantage of as many opportunities as possible to
learn new technologies, processes and methodologies. I take great pride in my work as an
analyst and developer and I am very enthusiastic about taking on new challenges in my
professional and personal life.
I have been employed in the Human Services I
&IT Cluster at the Ontario Ministry of Health
and Long-Term Care for over five years. From 2001 to 2003 I was an integral member of the
analysis and development team for a key ministry project. I assisted in the analysis,
design and development of the framework and task components contained within a new three-
tiered, J2EE Client Registration System. The project incorporated the use of the Rational
Unified Process and, given that the application was built using Java, an object-oriented
design. Prior to beginning work on application design, I utilized my skills in
communication in several Joint Application Development sessions with clients to assess
their needs and ensure that requirements were fully documented using Use Case models.
Also, I participated in the construction of several prototypes of the application, which I
then presented to users to obtain their feedback. In designing the task components of the
application I used Rational Enterprise tools such as Rose to create Unified Modeling
Language and data model diagrams describing the design of specific application objects and
processes. While in the development phase of the project I coded several key pieces of the
application s graphical user interface using Java Swing and XML and taking advantage of
development and deployment tools such as IBM Visual Age for Java, WebSphere Studio
Application Developer and WebSphere Application Server. I created several custom utilities
and factories which allowed more efficient creation of GUI objects by developers on the
project team and which are now in use by other projects within the ministry. I performed
unit testing on several components of the application and conducted integration tests
prior to each iteration of the application moving into our systems testing area. The
Client Registration System was enthusiastically received by users in Ministry of Health
and Long-Term Care district offices and I was given the opportunity to present the client
application at the Showcase Ontario I&IT Conference in Toronto in 2004.
My five years experience at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has provided me
with significant knowledge of the government standards for application development as well
as how to analyze, design and build applications governed by complex business rules and
legislation. In addition to the registration system, I have coded applications using
several programming languages including Java and Java Swing, Visual Basic, Perl,
JavaScript and COBOL using various tools and technologies for development which included
Visual Studio, NetBeans, TextPad and Micro Focus Mainframe Express and supporting
technologies such as Rational Enterprise Suite, Together Control Center, Rational
ClearCase and Microsoft Visual SourceSafe. I performed testing functions on all
applications I have been involved in coding and utilized testing and logging tools such as
JUnit and PCRTS. I have had significant experience developing in a J2EE architecture,
utilizing Enterprise Java Beans to accomplish business tasks on the mid-tier and I have
participated in the development of an application built on the MVC architecture.
I have excellent planning, reasoning and communications skills and thrive in a team
environment working with others to create efficient and effective technological solutions.
My qualities also include experience in project planning having put together a project
team and timelines for the creation of a new web service to communicate and exchange
information with the Canadian Federal Government. In addition, I performed a lead role on
a team charged with evaluating and recommending a new Configuration Management tool for
use in maintaining and archiving client and server-side source code within the Ministry of
Heath and Long-Term Care. I have proven my ability to utilize my interpersonal skills to
effectively interpret and document client requirements, identify and analyze problems and
respond to inquiries from a variety of sources in a professional and timely manner. In
addition I have provided training to end users of several new applications as well as
performed the role of mentor to college students working toward their placement credit
within the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
