SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE

With a background in Biology (B.S.) and Public Health/Epidemiology (M.S.Ed.), I have acquired an excellent knowledge base for medical practice. I have gained valuable work experiences that are continually helpful in my medical career. My medical residency has provided me with academic and social experiences, including those focused on hospital dynamics, bedside manner, outpatient environment, research techniques, and vital protocols in the emergency situation. Through my work and academic experiences, I have learned the basic medical sciences, clinical skills within the core curriculum and various specialties, extensive database research approaches, work with questionnaires and surveys, and data analysis techniques using computerized statistical packages (SAS, SUDAAN).

My research thesis in graduate school involved the creation of a health database or "health report card" of nine surrounding Washington Metropolitan counties, utilizing indicators based on Healthy People 2010. The data was compared to that of the national average and was used to focus the health department's preventive medicine tactics, whether it was improving screening techniques for various cancers, increasing vaccination opportunities, or educating the youth on healthy lifestyle choices. I worked on various research projects while in residency, and had the opportunity to present a poster at World Congress of Nephrology in Vancouver in April, 2011.

EXPERIENCE

University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD, 2nd year Fellow-July 2011-June 2013. I have had the opportunity to consult on various patients, including those with AKI, CKD, electrolyte abnormalities, and acid/base disturbances. I have performed both native and allograft renal biopsies. I have worked with transplant patients in both the acute post-transplant setting and in the outpatient setting, managing their immunosuppressive medications, and general health maintenance. Rotations through the outpatient dialysis center has helped me grasp the intricacies involved in the patient with chronic ESRD. Along with IHD, I have worked with many patients on CVVHF and peritoneal HD.

Staten Island University Hospital Department of Medicine, Staten Island, NY, Chief Medical Resident/Medical Resident- July 2007-June 2011, I was responsible for supervising and teaching the interns on the floor, admitting patients after they are assessed by the Emergency Room physicians, and the running of ACLS codes. I was also chosen to present a poster of my research at the ACP convention in Rye, NY.

ROW Sciences, Inc. Rockville, Maryland, Project Coordinator- June 2001-May 2002, I was actively involved on a contract with the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The project relates to the creation of a data management resource in order to present epidemiological, biostatistical, and programming support on oral health surveys. The primary task I had was the researching and entering of survey information. This is the first comprehensive database of all surveys nationwide, and internationally. I contributed to the implementation of an annual report detailing current data on all 52 indicators referred to in Healthy People 2010: Conference Edition on Oral Health.

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - I had the opportunity to work on preparation aspects of the Synar Ammendment, which seeks to reduce the availability of tobacco products to minors.

Office of Research Integrity- I worked on establishing a Resource Document, which facilitates the development of research guidelines by research organizations (universities, medical schools, law schools) and scientific societies. A conference titled, "Creating Effective Research Guidelines", which took place in Philadelphia in September 2002, acted as both an extension of the Resource Document and a way to acquire feedback on the Resource Document, was also under my auspices.

Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC-EMT-C Children With Special Health Care Needs. Children With Special Health Care Needs encompasses those children diagnosed with debilitating chronic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophies, cerebral palsy, or severe asthmatics. As a research assistant, I participated in an Outreach program to improve the communication between local Emergency Department and the Fire Departments, and the families in regard to the presence of those children and their disabilities, within the respective County. I performed rounds within the hospital every morning to speak with the parents of these children to obtain detailed information, such as allergies, baseline neurological status, baseline vital signs, preferred hospital, and a full list of medications. With this information in the respective EMS Dept's computer system, it quickens the time to treatment and allows the parents to feel more comfortable using 9-1-1. Educational sessions for the Emergency Medical Technicians and Firemen were carried out to assure their skills on the intricacies involved with Children With Special health Care Needs were kept current.

Institute for Mental Health Initiatives, Washington, DC, Graduate Assistant-I served as an assistant for a mental health organization that works in conjunction with the media to bring healthy mental health issues to the public's eye. During this time, I researched information for their seasonal publication, The Dialogue. I organized committee meetings with health professionals and media representatives, during which I presented my researched information and led discussions on the subject at hand. I assisted in the organization of IMHI's "Millenium Conference." Along with the many health professionals and policy makers present, Dr. Satcher spoke on the respective mental health report he had recently released.

University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, IL, Laboratory Research Assistant-As a research assistant, I conducted extensive experiments with Archae DNA towards cancer research. Archae DNA, which entail the third branch of the evolutionary tree, perform metabolically similar to Prokaryotes (E.coli) and contain comparable genetic material (DNA) and its functions to that of the Eukaryotes. With more comprehensive knowledge on these cells, our own cells can be better understood, towards finding cures for cancers and various other diseases. Sterilization techniques, running of protein gels, cultures, and transforming cells into E.coli were a few of the tasks that I performed.

Provena Covenant Medical Center, Champaign, IL, Medical Assistant-I served as an exercise physiologist assistant within the Cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation department, during which I measured and recorded blood pressures and heart rates of elderly cardiac patients throughout their exercise regimen.
