So I suspended (suspend-to-ram) my laptop (powerbook g4) a couple times in the past few

days, only to have it be dead or almost dead after opening it a while later. At first I

thought it was a hardware problem, or my battery going bad, but now I think I've traced

the problem through dmesg. It seems that the laptop is having some of its components

awakened shortly after suspend, even though the light on the front is still "snoring",

which is draining the battery. At least that's what I've guessed from the dmesg output. So

now I shutdown my laptop, powered it on, and immediately after everything got started up I

closed the lid, let it suspend, and opened it up again. Here is the complete dmesg output

clearly showing where the problem may exist. If a search is done for "LATE suspend" or

"EARLY resume", the seemingly troubling part of the output can be found faster.

I just recently updated to 2.6.21.5, and made oldconfig with no apparent difficulties.

I'm willing to provide any other output if necessary. Thank you for any ideas... This is a

really troubling problem for a travelling college student

Does it happen with older kernels? Do you still have a kernel that doesn't have this

issue?

I just tried 2.6.21.1, my previous (working) kernel, and about 4 minutes after suspending

it, the laptop just hard powered down, which happens every once in a while. I don't even

know where to begin with this problem. Oh, and the EARLY resume and LATE suspend messages

are appearing in 2.6.21.1 as well...

Maybe a PMU reset is in order? This feels so hopeless... :'(

Well, it'll do that if you close the lid, but don't suspend the machine. That's a

"feature" of the PMU to prevent overheating. From a console, try:

Code:

pbbcmd sleep

But don't close the lid. See if it actually sleeps.

Well I suspended it again under 2.6.21.1 and it didn't drain my battery! Same messages

though. I really wonder why 2.6.21.5 drains my battery...

I'm not sure the messages have anything to do with it. If you really think it's a kernel

change between those kernels, it might be time to try a git bisect, there's a decent

overview here: http://www.wlug.org.nz/KernelDevelopmentWithGit
