SUMMARY OF SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
8 years laboratory experience, doing wet analysis as well as several different instrumental
testing, including MS, NMR, GC, HPLC, ICP, AA, XRF, XRD and UV spectroscopy. My PhD
research covered preparation of both organic and inorganic complexes as well as the
analysis of macrocyclic crystal structures by means of XRD. 7 years teaching Chemistry at
university and secondary school level, including NMR and MS. I also conducted a number
of short courses in instrumental testing methods. Published 5 peer-reviewed articles in
various international academic publications while completing my PhD.
EDUCATION
PhD in Chemistry – Wits University, South Africa (1992)
(Thesis Title: Pentaaza macrocyclic complexes, under mentorship of Prof Jan Boeyens)
National Higher Diploma in Analytical Chemistry–Tshwane University of Technology (1987)
EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Position: Senior Research Analyst
Main job functions: Genmin Laboratories is a major mining laboratory for testing of a wide
variety of earth metals. My duties consisted of the following:
Developing methods for the identification of various elements in geological samples on the
PW1606 X-Ray spectrometer. Developing an in-house training programme for new and
present staff in the various sections of the laboratory. Solving problems encountered by the
staff in performing their duties in the XRF section. Supervising a team of 3 laboratory
technicians, and acting as Section Head of XRF when needed.

I was responsible for the compilation of a student manual covering all the laboratory
techniques and practices. I was also responsible for analyzing samples sent in from outside
companies. The following techniques and instruments were used - Wet analysis, atomic
absorption, spectrophotometry, flamephotometry, gas chromatography, HPLC,
X-ray fluorescence, IR, NMR, TG, DTA, sedigraph, density and plasticity.
4. South African Bureau of Standards, Pretoria, SA. (September 1983 - April 1984)
Position: Laboratory Technician
Main job functions: I was employed in the water laboratory where I was responsible for
the following analysis on water samples:
a) Wet methods - determination of pH, conductivity, suspended solids, COD, OA,
NH3, hardness, chlorides and phenol.
b) Atomic absorption - determination of metals
c) Spectrophotometry - phosphates
d) Turbidity - sulphates
e) Ion selective electrodes – fluorides
f) Ion chromatography – anions
