Project profile :

#PROJECT1:

Title : Village wise Drought mitigation measures -A

case study using

Remote sensing& GIS in Sivagangai Taluk

Environment : Arc gis 9.3,ERDAS

Description : Drought is a recurring phenomenon in many parts of the

world, bringing significant water shortages, economic losses and adverse

social consequences. The study area taken in to consideration is Sivagangai

taluk, part of old Ramanad district historically a drought prone area.

Using geomatic tools detailed analysis has been made with respect to

rainfall, water level, subsurface formation, and the geomorphology derived

out of remotely sensed data products. The collateral data collected from

the field have been converted in to spatial themes and overlay analysis

using Arc GIS 9.3 to derive the pattern of water level variation.

Estimation of ground and surface water potential for a considerable period

helped to identify the water stress condition and the same has been

correlated with respect to individual villages of Sivagangai taluk. The

village wise stress condition helped to plan for effective water resources

management by providing recharge and remedial measures to combat the

drought condition.

Title : QUANTIFICATION OF RAIN WATER HARVESTING POTENTIAL

FOR URBAN AREASUSING REMOTE SENSING & GIS

Environment : Arc gis 9.2

Database : Ms -Access

Description :

Urban centres in India are facing an ironical situation today. On one hand

there is the acute waterscarcity and on the other, the streets are often

flooded during the monsoons. This has led to serious problems with quality

and quantity of groundwater. One of the solutions to this urban water

crisis is rainwater harvesting. This paper describes the geospatial method

for calculating the rain water harvesting potential for urban areas. It has

been noted that the amount of urban runoff and its impacts on stream

conditions, water quantity and quality are correlated to anthropogenic

watershed imperviousness. The satellite image of the study area was

classified for various Landuse and Landcover classes which were spatially

overlaid on watershed data and population density data. Impervious surface

analysis was performed to calculate the percent watershed impervious

coverage and this impervious surface percent was used along with the

rainfall data to quantify the rain water harvesting potential for Chennai.
