Projects:
Major Qualifying Projects - Structural Health Monitoring of High-Rise Building
Structures, December 2011- May 2012: The project presents an application of structural health
monitoring (SHM) schemes to the large-scale civil engineering structures. To demonstrate the
effectiveness of the proposed approach, 76-story high-rise buildings equipped with a passive
tuned mass damper (PTMD) and an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) system under wind loads
are investigated.
Interactive Qualifying Project - Evaluating Occupant Load Factors for Business
Operations, January - May 2012: This study investigates the origins of the 100ft2/person factor
as specified by NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, previous occupant load studies, changes in office
space planning and use, availability of office furnishings, and current office occupant load
preferences, then recommends alternate occupant load factors and business use categories. The
study was done in collaboration with the NFPA.
Independent Study Project - Designing a 4-story reinforced concrete building, April - May
2012:
The study focused on designing the foundation, columns and floors and a 4-story building. Wind
and gravitational forces were assumed to act on the structure.
Independent Study Project - Structural Damage Detection, April - May 2012: The study
involved installing accelerometers on a cantilever beam in the laboratory and recording the
forces developed in the beam after a dynamic impact.
