To Whom it May Concern,
Thank you for considering my application for the Director of Education Technology position with the
Department of Education. I have worked in technology and education for the past 12 years. I spent the last five years developing educational technology for informal learning at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Prior to working at the museum, I spent seven years working in learning technology at Indiana University.
As IT Director at The Children’s Museum, I directed all aspects of data management, application
development and maintenance, infrastructure support, eLearning, web development, and internal
technical support.
A significant part of my job in recent years involved introducing new types of emerging media in the
visitor experience – particularly with schools. Though we were an informal learning institution, we
worked closely with educators and stayed relevant with what was happening in K-12. I created field trip programs using mobile technology, distance learning, and educational games based on Indiana
standards. I frequently looked for opportunities to partner with schools to try new types of technology, like science investigations using tablets and web-based games to teach complex concepts.
My other responsibilities were to create data standards, improve business processes to collect data in order to create a data warehouse and improve reporting and other aspects of infrastructure and
systems support. I was responsible for seeking out relevant grant opportunities, writing grant
applications, and administering grants. When I could, I pursued bleeding edge projects like contributing reliable and credible content to Wikipedia and using it as a global learning platform.
I understand the challenge for schools to keep up with the rapidly evolving pace of digital literacy. Schools must be able to cultivate 21st century skills and have the tools accessible and available to meet those goals. I am passionate about embracing emerging media and imagining new ways to facilitate learning with the use of technology. I would love to have the opportunity to apply my passion and my work ethic to this important position with the Department of Education.
Sincerely,
Angie McNew
