INNOVATION, LEADERSHIP, NETWORKS, AND BUILDING CAPACITY

Literacy@School Learning Centre Teacher and Steering Committee Member (2007-Present)

Literacy@School is a network of Learning Centre Teachers in the YRDSB. All teachers throughout the board are welcome to visit our classrooms in order to reflect on their own literacy programs. Being an L@S Learning Centre Teacher has been the most powerful ongoing project I have ever been a part of. It is a Professional Learning Community that connects me to other teachers in the board, province, and world. Having teachers, consultants, and administrators visit my classroom on a regular basis has benefitted my metacognitive ability as a teacher, and has thus meant that my own classroom program continues to improve on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

As part of the L@S Steering Committee, I have worked with my colleagues to organize and lead PD days for teachers, consultants, and administrators. I have been privileged not only to work with the best educators in our system, but also to have access to the most cutting-edge resources and professional development opportunities.

Literacy Teacher (2009-2011)

Being a Literacy Teacher at Charles Howitt has been an amazing opportunity for me to put my understandings of cognitive coaching, consulting, and collaborating into practice. What does Effective Literacy Instruction look like in our ever changing world? What are the most powerful ways in which we can use descriptive feedback and success criteria? How can digital tools be used to enhance literacy instruction? These are all questions I have helped raise and lead the exploration of in school embedded PD and one-on-one coaching. I have a passion for building capacity in contemporary literacy pedagogy and assessment. I hope to continue doing so for the rest of my career.

School Literacy Leadership Team (2007-2011)

Being a member of Charles Howitt s Literacy Leadership team has helped me grow into a true team member. Working with our amazing Group of 8 network of schools, awesome consultants, and school leadership team has taught me a lot about the gentle art of school leadership and PLN building. It has been immensely rewarding to be part of Charles Howitt s resurgence as a (as recognized by the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat).

Technology Lead Teacher (2004-2010, 2012-present)

I have been a TLT in nearly every year and school where I have been a teacher. Along with Literacy, it is undoubtedly one of my passions, an area in which I revel in acting as a consultant, coach, and collaborator. In this role, I have been very active in creating resources, engaging my colleagues in professional development opportunities, and helping them integrate technology and digital literacy meaningfully into their programs. Great Beginnings Instructor (2010-present)

What a rewarding experience it was to be an instructor at Great Beginnings. Our grade 5/6 (2010) and 7 (2011) had a great time working together to get prepared for the respective school years.

for Educators (2007)

This was a project run by the Literacy/Numeracy Secretariat. My class was filmed and interviewed for the DVD and online webcast on Non-Fiction Writing. It was incredible to have an entire media literacy unit actually turn into a real piece of media. What an experience for my students and I! Instructional Intelligence Demonstration Class (2008)

I was lucky enough to be introduced to Barrie Bennett for this amazing project. Kyn Barker (***.******@*****.***.**.**) came to my classroom and filmed my literacy block. We then took the raw footage to a meeting of administrators so that Barrie Bennett could model for them effective Literacy Walkthrough strategies. I learned so much from this project. Although it was quite daunting watching myself on a big screen as Barrie, myself, and others deconstructed the lesson, I learned how to reflect upon my own teaching in an objective, targeted manner. Tri-Board Instructional Intelligence Action Research Project (2008-2009)

This was a fantastic initiative bringing together teachers from the York, Peel, and Thames Valley Boards. I worked with two innovative teachers from the latter two to conduct action research. We explored how digital storytelling could effect the motivation of writers in our respective classrooms. Our results were presented at a summer symposium. G.O.T. Alternate Reality Gaming Pilot Project (2009)

I was very excited to be part of this pilot project which investigated the ways in which an alternate reality gaming environment could be used to deliver curriculum. The extent to which we tapped into student engagement and authenticity was, in my view, a harbinger of (hopefully good) things to come.
