SKILLS OVERVIEW
My most recent position was Technical Manager – Sales and Marketing, working for
A. H. Belo. Previously I held the positions of Senior Analyst/Programmer and Classified Systems Manager. Management duties covered a wide range of responsibilities including the evaluation of new systems, tracking maintenance contracts, project management, quality assurance, operations and technical support. In 2001 I received the “Belo Chairman’s Award” for my technical contributions.
I have experience with UNIX, Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 2003 server operating systems. I have had training in Informatica data integration, C+ programming, Crystal Reports, Sybase and Oracle. Another area of personal interest is the creation and maintenance of web sites.
Following are more specific activities. I was directly involved in the installation of a centralized Atex AdBase advertising order entry and publishing system serving four properties located across the country. This system runs in a Citrix environment with Linux database servers running Oracle. Prior to that I was involved in the selection and implementation of a Net-Linx AdVision system. This replaced the Atex J11 Classified system at The Dallas Morning News (TX) and Riverside Press Enterprise (CA). The Net-Linx AdVision system ran in a client-server environment. The AdVision workstations ran XP and the database servers ran AIX and Sybase. These systems supported advertising order entry, billing and publishing.
Prior to becoming Technical Manager, as a Senior Analyst/Programmer I evaluated a programming tool called the Windows Interface Language and used it to automate and monitor the execution of feeds, interfaces and processes. This significantly reduced the man-hours required to support the system. I worked with SQL in Sybase and Oracle. This included ad-hoc SQL for troubleshooting purposes, running maintenance scripts, creating custom scripts and updating application tables. In addition I performed upgrades to server/workstation operating systems and applications which included testing functionality prior to implementation. I was also the RightFax system administrator. Classified and Customer Service personnel used Rightfax to fax ad information from their desktop.
As Classified Systems Manager at The Dallas Morning News, I was responsible for all system functions ranging from advertising order entry to publishing Classified advertising. As manager, I had one assistant manager and 4 operators reporting to me. In addition to managing the team and new projects, I also maintained direct technical involvement. An example would be supporting the advertising pricing module written in macro assembler.
Working for Atex Publishing Systems I held the positions of Applications Engineer, Systems Engineer and Regional Technical Specialist. My focus was providing technical support for large daily newspapers. Two significant accomplishments were installing editorial and advertising systems at the Houston Post. I also wrote the custom advertising pricing module in macro assembler for the Orange County Register.
At the Detroit Free Press I was on the SII editorial and classified installation team. Subsequently I was on the Atex editorial and classified installation team. My last position was night Operations Supervisor with 4 operators reporting to me.
