Experience:
June Oct, 2008 Chief Mate on the 133 Schooner Adventuress. Sound Experience (SoundExp.org) is a non-profit
organization operating the Schooner Adventuress as an environmental education sailing vessel. The ship sails the waters
of the Puget Sound from as far south as Tacoma, WA to the San Juan Islands and Victoria BC. The Chief Mate is
responsible for running the ship s deck, safety onboard the ship, coordinate getting on and off the dock and anchor, direct
sail setting and striking, head of the emergency response team, responsible for overall ship s maintenance, assign/rotate
daily chores to crew, direct the activities of the bosun and 2nd mate. Length of sails ranged from 3 hours to 1 week.
February 2008 Crew on a delivery of a 46' Hylas Cutter from Fort Lauderdale to St. Lucia (about 2.5 week trip).
The Captain myself and another deckhand each stood day and night watches by ourselves.
April June, 2007 Mate on the 137 Schooner Denis Sullivan (DiscoveryWorld.org). Joined in Washington D.C. as
2nd Mate to assist in their transit back to the homeport of Milwaukee, WI via the St. Lawrence Seaway. Finished the
transit as Chief Mate. The Mates lead navigational watches with a minimum of 2 deck hands for 4 hours on watch and 8
hours off watch. We were normally at sea for a week with a 2 day stop for fuel, water and provisions.

April, 2004 May, 2006 2 Mate on the 115 Schooner A. J. Meerwald. The Bayshore Discovery Project
(AJMeerwald.org) is a non-profit organization operating the Schooner A. J. Meerwald as an environmental education
sailing vessel. Began 2004 sailing season as Educator / Deckhand. Progressed to 2nd Mate. The ship sails the waters
of the Delaware Bay and Delaware River and the East Coast up to New York City. Responsibilities included teaching a
variety of environmental subjects to 4th through 12th grade students from all kinds of backgrounds. Length of sails
ranged from 3 hours to 1 week.
March September, 2003 Trainee at Square Sail Shipyard, Ltd (Square-Sail.com). Attended 6-month Able Seaman
training program. Worked as deckhand for additional 3 weeks. Training included various certifications (see below) and
deckhand experiences. Sailed a total of 4,165 miles on 3 different tall ships. When not sailing, worked to maintain the
ships (including dry dock), participated in film work and maritime festivals, attended formal classroom lectures, made
traditional seaman s tools, and did canvas / rope work. We sailed from England to France several times and to Ireland.
August, 2002 on 85 Square Tops'l Schooner R. Tucker Thompson (Tucker.co.nz). Sailed from Vancouver BC to
San Francisco (1,189 miles) in the Tall Ships Challenge. Functioned as unpaid crew and worked alongside the paid crew
in overseeing the watches and welcoming guests onboard to tour the ship.
January August, 2001 Voyage Crew on the 145 Brigantine Soren Larsen (SorenLarsen.co.nz). Joined at Curacao
and sailed across the South Pacific to Vanuatu (over 11,200 miles). Participated in every aspect of the sailing. Skills
advanced to the level of watch leader. Studied and practiced celestial navigation.
1981 2002 Computer Professional (CharlesCook.com). W orked for a variety of software companies; the last 8 years
as an independent consultant. These positions required excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.
Traveled extensively throughout North America.

Background:
Grew up in a small rural community in northern Iowa. My father worked as a car mechanic and my mother at a nursing
home. I am the youngest of five children so grew up learning the importance of family values and how to exist on a
shoestring budget.
