The Miami-Dade County’s Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team is the repository in the community for the uniform and accurate identification and collection of domestic violence-related death information. The Fatality Review Teams were created to bring together dedicated professionals from diverse agencies and backgrounds in an effort to review adult and child domestic violence-related fatalities with a view towards identifying how these tragedies might have been prevented. As an integral member of the team, we develop community prevention and intervention strategies based on the knowledge gained from the review process and statistical models. The review team interacts and works closely with law enforcement agencies, community health providers, the Florida State Attorney General’s Office, Administrative Justices of the Courts, and the University of Miami Child Protection Team in reviewing historical data, developing quality improvement activities and indicators, analyzing statistical and computerized simulation models, and in writing policies and procedures to minimize the occurrences of domestic violence incidents throughout the county.

Skills, Accomplishments and Main Responsibilities:

Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Interact with a wide range of professionals in an effort to collect, organize, analyze and maintain accurate records of hundreds of domestic violence cases throughout Miami-Dade County.

Prepare statistical reports for distribution and presentation to the State Attorney’s Office, and a number of other City, State and Federal agencies. Protect the security of data collected to ensure that confidentiality is maintained.

Analyze statistical reports in order to address departmental challenges and make predictions on future outcomes.

Monitor the cancellation and schedule changes of a large number of court proceedings. Prepare statistical reports to review and maximize departmental resources utilization.

Possess excellent data gathering, organizational and analytical skills; able to comprehend and execute complex written and oral instructions; able to secure the cooperation of others and deal effectively with the public.

Maintain computerized databases of cases, status of orders of protection and general information pertaining to victims and defendants.

Initiate and participate in many departmental quality improvement activities. Lead committee responsible for implementing quality control processes after collected data is compiled and reviewed.

Act as a liaison between our review team and the different agencies that are involved in specific domestic violence related incidents.

Monitor the progress of court proceedings and communicate changes to appointed judges.

Analyze collected data with the purpose of understanding and/or recommending plans of action. Prepare charts, graphs, tables, and work with relational databases to effectively convey information.

Conduct daily meetings with judges, physicians, attorneys and other professionals in determining the facts about specific abuse cases.

Train other members of the department on how to effectively gather and analyze data.
