SUMMARY

I have worked in systems engineering for many different types of space missions. This experience includes working in avionics subsystem design and development; and systems engineering for science instruments, spacecraft, ground systems, and at the project level. I have also worked on mission end-to-end mission information systems and I was a ground systems chair in JPL`s concurrent engineering team, Team-X. I have worked at NASA/JPL, and at McDonnell Douglas (which is now Boeing). I have experience in a wide range of space projects, particularly in the four areas of space avionics, robotic planetary missions, robotic earth orbiter missions, and human spaceflight. I am looking for a new position in systems engineering or project engineering. With this wide range of experience, I expect that I can move into a systems engineering position for any of a number of projects.

EXPERIENCE

JET PROPULSION LABORATORY, Pasadena, CA 1995 - 2011

Senior Systems Engineer

* Served as ground systems, end-to-end information systems, and/or operations representative for several space mission study and proposal teams. Responsible for proposal/report sections on ground system, and cross discipline review of the entire proposal/report for consistent story on end-to-end mission information system (EEIS) for both command and telemetry.

* Representative for ground systems chair for the JPL concurrent engineering team called Team-X. Provide initial design and cost estimate for early mission studies for customer projects and principal investigators.

* Developed the draft version (Phase A) of the Systems Engineering Implementation Plan (SEIP) for a $500 million interplanetary mission.

* Participated in advanced networking study for advantages and use of delay tolerant networking protocols.

* EEIS engineer for the Prometheus/JIMO mission to Jupiter and return data to Earth at a very high rate (10 Mbps). The EEIS engineer is a member of project systems engineering team, and reports to the Project System Engineer.

* Member of the Constellation Ground and Mission Operations Systems Integration Group (GMO SIG) in the development and maintenance of requirements for the Constellation mission operations and the ground launch/recovery systems.

* Used requirements tools DOORS & CRADLE for the development of mission requirements.

* Performed test effectiveness analysis for Constellation Program Office, to determine effectiveness of environmental tests so failures are found in testing instead of in flight. Analyzed development of common failure database for all NASA problem failure reports.

* NASA Rappoteur to the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) in the area of the standardized spacecraft avionics interfaces. Worked with this international committee to develop international standards on standard onboard interfaces.

* Participation in an advanced sensor system technology project to determine the sensors and the sensor technology necessary for the development of an integrated vehicle health management system. Technology was intended for NASA reusable spacecraft projects.

* Lead Systems engineer for the SeaWinds instrument, which flew on the Japanese ADEOS-II spacecraft. This required negotiating detailed interfaces between the SeaWinds instrument and the spacecraft, supplied by Mitsubishi Electric Company. Was required to deliver the SeaWinds engineering model to the NASDA, the Japanese space agency.

MCDONNELL DOUGLAS, Huntington Beach, CA 1988 - 1995

Principal Systems Engineer

* Lead Engineer in architectural and design documentation for pressurized elements (Nodes) for the International Space Station (ISS). This documentation provided single technical baseline for the company`s technical proposals and cost reduction bids. Also participated in NASA/multi-contractor teams to determine the baseline ISS assembly sequences for the Nodes and Laboratory modules, which were implemented in the Space Shuttle assembly flights to the ISS.

* Participation on the Space Station redesign task force as part of the late Space Station Freedom (SSF) design maturation process, as well as NASA and contractor based studies and proposals for the redesign process in evolution of SSF into ISS.

* Team leader for the development of the Space Station (Freedom) network management task. This team made recommendations for the methods and processes used for the management of the flight information networks.

* Co-leader for the successful integration of the CCSDS protocols into the SSF uplink and downlink designs.

ADDITIONAL RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

* Technical Group Supervisor for avionics (CDS) design and systems engineering group.

* Cognizant Engineer for Mars Observer Payload Data Subsystem (PDS).

* Design engineer for Galileo Orbiter spacecraft Command and Data (computer) subsystem (CDS).

EDUCATION

Masters of Science (MSEE) and Bachelor of Science (BSEE) in Electrical Engineering degrees from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

* Numerous technical programs, conferences, and seminars

* Lead author or co-author of 20 professional papers and presentations

* Guest editor of an issue of IEEE Network Magazine

TECHNICAL SKILLS

* Familiar with Microsoft Office for MacIntosh and PC: Word, PowerPoint, & Excel including VBA programming

* DOORS and CRADLE systems engineering and requirements development tools

* FileMaker Pro data base

AFFILIATIONS

* Former member of IEEE, AIAA, and AIAA Digital Avionics Technical Committee

* Executive Vice Chairman of the 16th Digital Avionics Systems Conference, held in Irvine, CA in October 1997
