Features

Good engineering is no place for the timid, the hotshot, or the incompetent. That is why

I write the test plan first, to find the bugs before they find us. This approach also

provides room for those inevitable words Oh by the way, can you do . That is why the

bosses had assigned those tasks to me.Employment

ContractProgrammer (1991-1998)

Ramtek Corporation and Pivotal Graphics

San Jose, California

I developed, tested, and maintained graphics firmware for the company several times from

1991 to 1998. These were small changes to meet the customer's requirements using fast

firmware that I developed, at the NAPA Division, from 1983 through 1991.

Consulting Software Development Manager (Sept 1992 - January 1993)

Softbox (California State Lottery)

Sacramento, California

I was responsible for the design and development of lottery software. This software was

for a new point of sales terminal for the California State Lottery. Part of the work

included the design of communications protocols and messages between cooperating gaming

processes. Development took place on Dell 486 computers running Microsoft Windows 3.1. I

spent a great deal of time in meetings and helping other programmers with their work. The

problem was that Windows was not a reasonable platform for development with the tools that

they were using.

Several firms and the California State Lottery commission were developing this project.

They claimed the work would be completed in 18 to 24 months and I expressed my doubts

because they were competing against each other rather than working as a team. The first

machines became available about four years to five years later and they were too large for

many small stores. So they replaced these machines and the software several times before

they were considered reliable.

Software Analyst (1991-1992)

DST Controls

Benicia, California

I was responsible for the design of the hardware and software of a sorting terminal. This

terminal featured a keyboard, an alphanumeric display, a serial connection, and internal

and loop back tests. The terminal enabled a postal worker to sort packages and mail sacks.

I designed software for the graphic displays that enabled postal worker to monitor and

control postal conveyer systems. I performed integration testing between program

components and programmable logic controls.

Staff Software Systems Engineer (1983 - 1991)

Ramtek Corporation

San Jose, California

Worked on a wide range of complex problems involving Ramtek's graphics and imaging

display systems. I worked closely with hardware engineers in the development of new

processor and video boards. I added new features to internal firmware to meet customers'

special requirements. Their requirements covered a broad range of applications including:

real time video digitizing, flight simulators, seismic displays, space imaging, medical

imaging, Air Traffic Control, and NEXRAD weather radar displays (the one's you see on the

weather reports). I integrated peripherals and cursor controllers with Ramtek products.

These included: keyboards, printers, touch screens, small tablets, large tablets,

trackballs, and force sticks.

In 1988, I became responsible for the internal firmware on the Ramtek 4000 and 9000

series display generators and achieved major performance improvements in both series. The

Fast Firmware Initiative improved overall performance by more than 400 percent without

upgrading the hardware components and only the erasable programable ready only memory

(EPROM) had to be updated. This allowed the critical software elements to use the fast RAM

to execute the display generator s instruction set. The resulting performance increase

allowed the display generator to produce a full 1280 x1024 screen of variable size random

fractals much faster than the competitor s products.

ContractProgrammer (1980 - 1983)

I upgraded the software in a beverage distributor's sales and inventory system. I

developed a local network using microcomputers. I developed microcomputer-based Univac UTS-

200 and UTS-400 bi-synchronous terminal emulators and advised clients of alternative and

effective applications of technology.

Senior Engineer (1975 - 1980)

Sperry Systems Management

Benicia, California

I was responsible for the development of software products and managing computer

operations. The work required knowledge of and the use of a variety of computer languages,

systems, and networks. Product development included computer purge programs, ship

alteration inventory, cost accounting, and interactive data entry and inquiry. I reduce

the workload from 160 hours per week, to 20 hours per month.

Programmer/Analyst (1973 - 1975)

Systems Development Corporation

Colorado Springs, Colorado

I was the lead designer and programmer for the Test and Diagnostics for the

Communications Control system at the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex. I was responsible

for the development of real time test and diagnostic software for the communications

system. This included data links, local circuits, and peripheral devices. This work

required a knowledge of a variety of link protocols and equipment that the system used.

Special Duty Assignment (

1968 - 1973)

United States Air Force

Ent AFB, Colorado

By their request, higher authority assigned me to document and test new programs to track

orbital and ballistic objects. I assumed the responsibility to improve and upgrade Orbital

Analyst software in the NORAD Combat Operations Space Defense Center. I improved the

Spacetrack software to reflect developments in the tracking and maintaining information on

orbiting and ballistic objects. The Air Force recognized my achievements and contributions

to the Space Defense mission.

Education - B.A. with Honors in Physical Science and in Mathematics, Sonoma State College

(now Sonoma State University), Rohnert Park, California

Assembly, 80x86 Assembly, and many others.
