Tyler Jacobsen Curriculum Vitae, 2012

Biography

Tyler Jacobsen a conceptual computer artist, performer, and musician, who has

developed an arts practice that integrates video production, database art, and

multimedia programming with experimental performance and social activism. He

received his BFA from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2003, Jacobsen was

awarded a full fellowship from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, earning an MFA in

Electronic Art.

Jacobsen s early networked interventionism projects garnered both criticism and

acclaim from media outlets such as Adbusters, MSNBC, CNN News, BBC World,

WIRED, and even the FBI for their brazen and subversive political statements, while

simultaneously earning him a place in the New Media art field. Jacobsen s work has

been exhibited and performed in galleries and festivals in the US and abroad, such

as Next 5 Minutes in Amsterdam, Transmediale in Berlin, The Institute of

Contemporary Art in London, MassMoCA, Centraal Museum Utrecht, and the

Museum of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, Serbia. He is the recipient of numerous grants

and awards, including commissions for the creation of new artwork from Franklin

Furnace and Rhizome, and has been published by Autonomedia in Data Browser 01:

Economizing Culture, for his work exploring resistant strategies on digital

technologies.

Jacobsen s work has gradually shifted to conceptualized and at times playful

investigations of society s interaction with the omnipresent and ever-changing

technological landscape. Stylized in a nexus of past, present, and future,

Jacobsen s work often subtly disrupts society s collective psychological

expectations of time and progress. These themes are explored in various projects,

from Cathode Ray Mission, Jacobsen s technologically-restricted electronic

performance group that uses yesterday s innovations to constructively intervene in

the technological transformation of tomorrow, to his most recent parasitic

media project which uses open source APIs to investigate the exponentially-

growing global obsession with cultural worth based on internet presence.

Since 2008, Jacobsen has collaborated in the development of Medical Records

LLC, a vinyl-only record label, which brings obscure synthesized audio work from

past decades to a modern audience. Launched in 2010 to critical acclaim from

Pitchfork Media and Other Music, Jacobsen currently serves as Artistic Director and

Head Designer of this Seattle-based company.
